May-08-18  cocker: I agree with <ChessHigherCat>. When you can't solve the Tuesday puzzle you know you won't be getting much value from this feature this week.
May-08-18  mel gibson: Such a silly blunder of a game by Black.
You have to look at all possible checks from your opponent before moving.

Black should have played 16... Qe7.

May-08-18  malt: 17.Nf6+ Kh8 18.Nh5 Rg8
(18...g6 19.Qe5+ f6 20.Q:f6+ R:f6 21.Rd8+ Qe8 22.R:e8+ Rf8 23.R:f8# )

19.Rd8 g6 20.Qe5+ f6 21.Q:f6#

May-08-18  The Kings Domain: Sweet puzzle and neat finish. Nice miniature.
May-08-18  Mayankk: First Tuesday i have missed for a while. Nf6+ was obvious. After that I kept trying to make Nxh7, Qh4+ and either Rd3 or Bd3 work but somehow it didn’t feel right and more like a speculative sac I often fall for.

Then I looked at the elegant solution in the actual game and realised how far off I was.

May-08-18  WorstPlayerEver: This one was so easy I totally missed it ^^
May-08-18  thegoodanarchist: I got the first move, at least! :)
May-08-18  lost in space: got this one quckly. Key move is 18. Nh5.

Richard Taylor: I found this also the variation if g6 is played leads to a win for White. It isn't so easy but I have seen similar attacks and tactics. The Rd8 pin is a common tactical theme. I saw it all! (Well, most of it...
May-08-18  Chess for life: Rather sophisticated for a Tuesday IMHO...
May-08-18  takchess: Within my range but was a little impatient . Bailed out after 18.Nh5. A future thought. When a mating square is protected by a rook on the back rank. Think of a Pin to remove the rooks protecting powers. Study PB notes for g6. ....What's nice is the defense <18...G6 19/Qe5+ f6 19.Qxf6+!>

Richard Taylor: Ah, I missed the nice Q sac. I was going to take on f6.

  Richard Taylor: <Phony Benoni: 17 Nf6+ Kh8 18.Nh5 Rg8 19.Rd8> is a standard tactic. What's nice is the defense <18...G6 19/Qe5+ f6 19.Qxf6+!>>

I think in an actual game I would have found that Q sac for sure as one is advised to look for all checks and captures. But I missed it. I was so sure that Nxf6 won. It does but not as beautifully.

It is a beautiful example of how to finish an attack.

May-08-18  Walter Glattke: I apologize, I did not see 20..Qxf6 Rxf6 21.Rd8+ in the morning, but even 20.Nxf6 Kg7 21.Ng4+ Kf7 (Kg8 Nh6#) 22.Qf6+ Ke8 23.Rd8# or 22.-Kg8 23.Nh6# would win, but not so powerful. 20.Nxf6 Nd7 21.Rxd7 Qxc2+ 22.Kxc2 Bxd7 23.Ne8+/Nh5+ Rf6 24.Qxf6+ Kg8 25.Qg7# - hard Tuesday puzzle.
May-08-18  Walter Glattke: "Glattfish" or "Waltermodo" says, mate in four, so black can answer 18.Nh5 with Qc2+. Happily, we are no computers.
May-08-18  Walter Glattke: Mate in move 24.
May-08-18  Pasker: Took some extra time to find the solution than usual Tuesdays mainly because of the quite move 18. Nh5. It neither capture anything nor a sac but it forces mate. Foreseeing quite moves in the middle of a combination is a bit tough but in this case its okay since it comes only the second move. Not too deep.

So in this position Qxf6+ forces ..Rxf6 ,with whites Re8+ the rook must return to f8 to ineffectively block the mate. Since these type of deflection,a move that gain a tempo to pull a piece off a square only returned to be captured is fairly common; I wonder : Is there a specific term for this maneuver ? Besides deflection.

May-08-18  Once: I didn't get this one - not a tactic that I've seen before.

One fun line is after 18...g6 19. Qe5+ f6 ...

White wins with the brutal 20. Qxf6+, but if he likes to play with his food he could opt to put a third piece en prise with 20. Rd8!

It's mate in 4 and a delicious GOOT.

Tough for a Tuesday.

May-08-18  morfishine: <takchess> You can include overload with the black rook covering both back rank & <f6>
May-08-18  landshark: Sad shark. No feeding frenzy. Rd8 was completely beyond my event horizon today. Funny thing how sometimes the harder you think, the more reinforced in your rut your thinking gets. Congrats to CG for a really instructive Tuesday -
May-08-18  Sniffles: Around 13. Black was playing like s/he was 1000 points lower than White. This is obviously not a Tal game.
May-08-18  varishnakov: bit easy for a Tuesday
May-08-18  PJs Studio: I thought it was a touch difficult for a Tuesday.
May-09-18  morfishine: <takchess> I forgot the obvious, for a straightforward tactic, <19.Rd8> is a pin, and a fatal one at that

*deflection & decoy are sometimes used interchangeably though these are not exactly alike
