SYSTEMSSON
(born Feb-29-1900, died Apr-01-1979) Ireland (federation/nationality Sweden)

[what is this?]

Zoltan Arpad Ulf Min Systemsson IV was born February 29, 1900, in Dublin. Before he learned to speak, he had moved into Sweden and thus had learned Swedish as his native language. At the age of six he had learned how to play by imitating his father play the London System, and although he still was fuzzy about some of the rules, his talents were realized nonetheless. He began to win many local tournaments and soon the Swedish chess scene was abuzz with talk of this prodigy.

Unlike many of the world's top players, he continued to advance even through World War One. His career took a turn in 1921 after a severe case of depression as a result of his father dying in a tragic train crash, but he persevered. His most famous game was played in 1927 against the marvelous player Aron Nimzowitsch. Systemsson lost, but continued to play actively in Sweden until he retired in 1956. His efforts were celebrated until his death in 1979, at which point people started to slowly realize that he was a bit of patzer all along.

There is, in fact, no real player named Systemsson, invented by Hans Kmoch. This biography is a joke and an homage to Kmoch’s wit. His game against Aron Nimzowitsch in 1927 a fabrication used as an April Fool's joke. We hope you laughed at it.

WannaBe: *Sob* never married, no kids. I really
feel for poor Zoltan.

Perhaps in the tradition of Poe, somebody can place
flowers and alcohol on his grave at midnight on his birthday?

Every 4 years of course. 8-)

Apr-07-05  hintza: <dac1990> <I took the liberty of writing a bio. Any comments?> Yes, brilliant biography! And to think some people wanted his name to be Arpad?!
Apr-07-05  dac1990: There also never was a February 29, 1900. On any leap year ending in 00, there is no added day. Makes sense, no?
Apr-07-05  DanielBryant: Yeah, I caught that one. Clever.
May-08-05  Resignation Trap: <dac1990> <<On any leap year ending in 00, there is no added day.>>

No, not quite! In the case of years ending with 00, they are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. Remember the year 2000 ?

May-08-05  aw1988: In the year A.D. 1927, war was beginning.

*boom*

Apr-01-06  blingice: Wow! It's Systemsson's death day today!
Apr-11-06  MorphyMatt: lol. 2 pages of kibitzing on a player who has only played 1 game. LOL!!!
Apr-11-06  technical draw: "The man who never was"..Good movie with Clifton Webb.
Jun-13-07  dabearsrock1010: depressed over his dads tragic train crash, but perservered...that made me laugh
Apr-23-08  jaxter: <Resignation Trap> <She's Icelandic: Systemdottir.> Actually, that's an Icelandic LAST NAME (surname), not a FIRST NAME (Christian name). It can apply, of course, only to a woman.
Apr-23-08  jaxter: This game itself was part of a spoof article ghost-written by Hans Kmoch, and included self-congratulatory annotations written by the (spurious) author, Nimzowitsch (who was not known for his humility). In John Watson's book, "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy", the section on Overprotection addresses the failings of this proposed concept of Nimzowitsch's, and relates this story (as does Ray Keene, in his biography of AN).
Aug-13-08  ravel5184: But it says on the Nimzowitsch-Systemsson page that his name is "Herr Systemsson"!
Aug-13-08  Ziggurat: "Herr" means "Mister".
Aug-13-08  ravel5184: Oh me stupid! I'll delete my post if you delete yours.
Nov-22-08  thebribri8: <MorphyMatt: lol. 2 pages of kibitzing on a player who has only played 1 game. LOL!!!> Actually, he didn't play ANY games. We are all pathetic. :).
Dec-15-08  patzer of patzers: <aw1988> Too bad Nimzowitsch didn't sac the queen in the "game". It would've made the annotations even funnier!
Dec-15-08  brankat: Up until this moment I didn't even know this page existed.

A great game, and even better annotations :-) I think I'll use them as a model when/if annotating my own games!

Feb-06-09  WhiteRook48: how can the game be a fake??
