Stefan Lazare (born Lazar Suchowolski in Bialystok, Poland in 1909) moved to France in 1927, and studied Mathematics at Besancon University. He finished 1st in the 1934 Paris City reserve championship, and finished in the top half of the field in the Paris City championship between 1935 and 1938. He changed his name to Stefan Lazare when he arrived in Melbourne, Australia in June 1939.
