Sally Simpson: Alastair is a very good friend of mine - we must have played hundreds of skitles, blitz games....

He has some sparkling games on his C.V. especially from the 70's and 80's.

I use to hate noting up his games and had to resort to using his first name all the time. That meant using Black's first name. The end product looked liked the cosy notes you get to a kiddies game when infact he was bowling over IM's.

How would you note up a game with Alastair as Black playing a lad called Alastair Black. Impossible.

As a schoolboy Alastair played Smyslov in a simul in Edinburgh and swindled him in a Rook ending. I'll repeat that. He swindled Smylov in a Rook ending. I've seen the game, it is a swindle and at time when Smyslov had seen off 90% of the opposition.

He also has simul draws v Suetin, Stein and Topalov. I have two simul draws v Shamkovich and Aagaard (both Latvian Gambits) but nothing in the same class as swindling Smyslov in a Rook ending. I'm jealous.
