Sep-23-05  sneaky pete: A J Goldsby has 9 pages of kibitzing and this fine fellow (with a 100% score) none? How unfair!

offramp: Mike Selvey wrote: "His glare could freeze hell." He terrorised opponents for a decade in the Middlesex League, once splitting a board in two and ripping the top off a clock with his teeth. His amazing shoulders and chest-on acuities could unleash what Dennis Amiss called a "trapdoor pawn" because the opponent would lose sight of it until it appeared in front of his nose. But his most infamous act came as Board 10 in a match against the Post Office at Mount Pleasant in 1985. Angered by the barrage of fruit and pebbles, he picked up a brick being used as an artificial trophy and threw it into the crowd, injuring a local student leader.

offramp: This malcontent has been disturbing Edward Winter again: http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... Note #4375
Jul-11-06  suenteus po 147: One of the funniest kibitzers on the whole site. Of course he's an Irishman :)

<offramp> Ever read Ulysses?

offramp: I have indeed read Ulysses! I think Joyce was a bit of a one-hit wonder, sadly. Finnegans Wake is not, for me, readable, and the books before Ulysses are a bit dull. But Ulysses is very funny. and what more could you ask?

Domdaniel: <offramp> -- < Finnegans Wake is not, for me, readable, and the books before Ulysses are a bit dull. But Ulysses is very funny. and what more could you ask?> I *almost* agree. Yes, the early ones are a bit so-what, and FW is too meta ... though it's fine when one abandons the attempt to read the whole thing, instead taking it a few random pages at a time. I started it in 1975 and I still haven't finished.

offramp: The last time I checked on Google there were 4 Alan O'Briens.

offramp: I agree totally with <domdaniel > about reading FW. It is best just to read certain bits at a time.

It certainly can expand one's reading; The House by the Churchyard by le Fanu is a book I never would've read otherwise.

Aug-14-15  thegoodanarchist: Isn't the entire purpose of reading FW to engage with others who read FW, and discuss obscure passages of FW with the aim of being pretentious, and also of being condescending, to those who don't read unpalatable literature that is promoted by poseurs?

Just curious.

Aug-14-15  zanzibar: It's been awhile, but I remember <Ivy Day in the Committee Room> as being particularly funny, from <Dubliners>.

And often I've quoted, and more often butchered, this piece of wisdom:

<"Many's the good man before now drank out of the bottle.">

Mar-13-16  morfishine: Good Evening <offramp>! I finally found you and just wanted to say you are one of my favorite posters! Keep at it, too many people take this stuff way too seriously

One day, I'd like to have a game posted

Jun-30-16  zanzibar: Who does this guy think he is, writing in to Winter pointing out overlooked mates by GM's?!

That's a lovely shirt. Did you get it from a rummage sale?

Apr-03-20  thegoodanarchist: This is what I think of when I hear "O'Brien":

Do you have a friend named Dylan Murphy?

Nov-28-23  stone free or die: Some chess-related artwork by a <Alan O'Brien> can be found on p12 of this magazine:

I suspect it's our man Godfrey.

<morfishine> are you possibly suggesting <AB>'s lost his pebbles?!
