Mar-20-14  thomastonk: J.W. Lukenbach often appeared as a correspondent of the "NY Clipper" chess column in the 1880s. It seems that he was then a resident of Cincinatti, who traveled a lot for business reasons. Once, his name was given as J. Wash Lukenbach.

In later years (1890s) he appeared among the officials of the Manhattan CC.

Tabanus: <z> No, I think that's Jacob W. Luckenbach (1850-1897), who was a grocer in Bethlehem,

May-09-19  Nosnibor: <Tabanus> You seemed to have spent a lot of time "Looking back" on Luckenbach! Never the less brilliant detective work.

fredthebear: Not to be confused in any way with Luckenbach, Texas in Texas Hill Country made famous by the country song.

Slick Website: http://www.luckenbachtexas.com/

WARNING: This tiny village is almost a ghost town w/a small store and country music venue -- not even a post office in operation! Nearby Fredericksburg, TX would be the place to stay for tourists.

You'll find some damn good chess played frequently in the Dallas-Fort Worth area though (their major tournaments are worth the trip), and Waco, TX has some chess activity, too.
