Jun-21-12  achieve: I never liked him, and obviously not a great following, though a good columnist at times, provided he doesn't blindly follow engine evaluations.
Sep-26-12  wordfunph: from IM Willy Hendriks book Move First, Think Later..

<Gert Ligterink relates that he was setting up a small party to celebrate his first IM norm. Hubner passed by, and when he was informed about the occasion, he quickly managed to spoil the festive atmosphere: 'At home I have a dog that cannot play chess. But if I teach him for half a year, he must at least be able to become a master.'>

Without any more context (were Huebner and Ligterink friends?), hard to tell if Huebner was being a total jerk or if he was joking in good jest. If the latter, not a very funny joke anyway.

MissScarlett: Sounds like deadpan Teutonic humour in the style of the late, lamented <johnbarleybore>.
Aug-21-20  Muttley101: When I was a junior starting out I was travelling to a tournament by train, and had taken a copy of "My System" to read, which I had recently bought. A guy got in at another stop and sat opposite me, saw what I was reading and asked me if I was travelling to the tournament also. He introduced himself and asked me what I thought about the book, which I said I had only recently got but didn't get the later parts. He said he thought "My System" was a good book but that you needed to be at least master strength to understand what Nimzowitch was trying to get across.

We chatted about Nimzowitch for a bit, and I asked him what section he was playing- the open- and he asked me- the minor. He was way out of my league, but he had no problem chatting to a novice, and was happy to share with me his experiences until we reached our destination. I appreciated travelling with someone who was a decent guy with no airs about being a very strong player who just liked talking about chess.

That was Gert Ligterink. Good bloke.

perfidious: Not sure I ever read <My System> cover to cover, and never really dipped into it till I was already at least 2100 US, but Ligterink was bang on: it is no book for novices.

A pleasure to read of <Muttley>'s experience with Ligterink.
