SANDIPAN CHANDA
(born Aug-13-1983, 41 years old) India

Chanda Sandipan was born in Calcutta. He became a GM in 2003. He shared first place in the Indian Championship in 2003, 2004 and 2006, but each time lost the title to Surya Shekhar Ganguly in the play-offs. He represented India on board 4 at the Olympiad (2008) and placed =1st at Tradewise Gibraltar (2013), although he ultimately took third place after losing to the ultimate winner of the event, Nikita Vitiugov, in the Tradewise Gibraltar (Tiebreaks) (2013).

Paco Vallejo Pons of Spain won his first game quite comfortably against Chand Sandipan of India. He was comfortable in the second game but Sandipan fought back to the point where he should have won, only the make a terrible blunder which cost him the win. Chanda earned 13 elo points from this open.

  FSR: A shame that Chanda never played Joseph Daniel Lear.
Aug-13-18  diagonal: Sandipan placed twice first ex aequo at the prestigious Gibraltar Open, namely in 2010 and again in 2013, in both years finishing as semi-finalist after the speed play-off tie-breaks.

<8th Gibtelecom Chess Festival 2010>

There was a tie for first place of nine (!) players at 7.5/10. The top four players on tie-break played off in a knockout. Michael Adams beat Jan Gustafsson and Francisco Vallejo Pons beat Chanda Sandipan. <Michael Adams> beat Vallejo Pons in the final of the playoff to take the tournament title.

<11th Tradewise Chess Festival 2013>

Four players tied on 8/10 and took part in a rapid playoff. <Nikita Vitiugov> beat Chanda Sandipan in the semi-finals and Nigel Short (who beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the other semi-finals) in the final to emerge as the eventual winner.
