Lol. We're all greedy really but deaths a bit Finan...

^^ See what I did there? Lol. Anyways to give you hope, or not (!?), I *nearly* put 2500 on the Muckyduck Pogo game today to be drawn... I'd be top 14 if I had. Hate the word "if", lol.

Apr-03-15  MarkFinan: Nice win Pcw, lol. It's wagers like that that makes me put 50 on the real longshots now, time is running out. After today I'll either be top 15 or below 30, top 10 is pretty much impossible now. But better to burn out than fade away, right.
Apr-03-15  MarkFinan: Well I just lost 1500 so you're back in position <greed and 💀> !! I'll reach top ten next time, I'm getting there, lol.
Apr-03-15  MarkFinan: This leg ends tomorrow right? That means putting all my chess bucks on longshots and skanking the bookie. No prize for 18th place.

Penguincw: Briefly looking at the ChessBookie Hall of Fame, all 8 championships to date had at least one non-qualifier end up in the top 10 (or whatever number was alloted)*.

* According to that page, in 2011, a guy by the name of <gun inn> (perhaps related to <gus inn>) played and finished in 7th place, without initially qualifying.

P.S. <Mark>, how did you get that symbol (<greed and 💀>)? I keep seeing it all over the internet, and have no idea what it is or whatever.

Apr-03-15  greed and death: <Well I just lost 1500 so you're back in position <greed and 💀> !!>

Nah, you're still about 200 ahead of me Mark... :P

Apr-04-15  MarkFinan: <greed and death: <Well I just lost 1500 so you're back in position <greed and 💀> !!> Nah, you're still about 200 ahead of me Mark... :P>

I've put 9500 cb's on today's games! Even if all my major wagers (wheyy lol) come off I can't make top ten, but they're mostly long shots so I'll no doubt end up behind you after today.

<P.S. <Mark>, how did you get that symbol (<greed and 💀>)? I keep seeing it all over the internet, and have no idea what it is or whatever.>

<Penguincw> It's a skull💀 emoji from a TouchPal keyboard. If you have a tablet, smart phone or iPad I'd downloaded it, it's better and faster than swiftkey because you can just speak the words and then amend the very few spelling mistakes. Whenever you say "death" it types the skull emoji instead. Technology eh?

Apr-04-15  MarkFinan: The Muz Pogo game looks drawn so that puts my live cb's rating at $11390. Just saying.

Penguincw: Thanks for running the show <Annie K.>. You did a great job. I'll post a better congrats later on when the winners are announced. I wish the next bookie good luck (I heard <Switch> is giving a 2nd crack at it).

Anyway, here are some brief stats:

Championship 2015
Total Wager: 2,143,675
# of events: 583
Juice: 63,516

Let's compare that to the other 2 bookies:

<wordfunph> (Fall 2014)

Total Wager: 2,337,246
# of events: 407
Juice: 76,059

<SwitchingQuylthulg> (Summer 2014)

Total Wager: 1,989,905
# of events: 572
Juice: 61,078

For a full breakdown of the Championship leg, see http://web.archive.org/web/20150405... (just scroll down).

Also, like I said, I bet the minimum on every single outcome. It was a lot of work, and not that much fun, so I probably won't do it again. It sucks even more how I kept track of my bets, and would've finished with 5833 cbs instead of 2995. Grr...

Anyway, (all approx.), I won 551 of my 3296 bets (16.7% winning) and won 11,985 after spending 11,177 for a differential of +808. I also made a whopping 18 errors (ex. accidentally betting an extra 2 cbs on an outcome), which cost my account a grand total of 33 cbs, meaning my account should be 3028 cbs, even though it doesn't add up still...

Apr-05-15  MarkFinan: <Penguincw> That link is age 18+! And if Nakamura had won yesterday it would have cancelled out my losing bets and I'd have finished... 11th. Maybe next time.
Apr-05-15  scout118: <Chessgames Bookie: The last of this Championship Leg's bets has been paid off - hope everybody had fun playing! Over to you, <cg> and our next Bookie... :)>

Thanks Annie K. Enjoyed that leg; many ups and down. Hope the next bookie gets rolling. Betting will be heavy for current /succeeding tournaments - US Chess Champs, Gashimov, etc.

Apr-05-15  technical draw: Thanks <Annie K>. Nice show. Congrats to <Switchy>. I said i wanted a top ten finish and that's what I got: !0th. lol.....

chessgames.com: We are going to do one last minute check of the logfiles, just to make sure there is no foul play, and then make the formal announcement of the winners and prizes.

Congratulations to the winners, and a big round of applaud to Annie K. for handling this leg with exceptional flair.

  chessgames.com: Announcing

< ♔ The 2015 Chess Bookie Champion of the World ♔ >

The leaderboard is correct as it stands, and the winner is, yet again...

User: SwitchingQuylthulg

With a score of 52,590 chessbucks, he was far and away in first place. (I think he scooped up an extra 10K at the end there just to show off.) He will receive a $100 gift certificate for the Chessgames Store and a free one-year membership to Chessgames.

Second and third place runner-ups are <Winter> with 23,736 chessbucks, and <Sneaky> with 20,314, who will both receive a free one-year membership as well as a $25 gift certificate to the Chessgames Store.

The remaining runner-ups are all automatically seeded into next year's Championship:

(4) Beholder 18,574
(5) TIMER 17,185
(6) Kynas 15,222
(7) 4tmac 15,099
(8) Robin01 14,075
(9) scout118 13,528
(10) technical draw 12,179

Congratulations to the winners!

The next leg will begin either Tuesday or Wednesday. Your Chessbookie for the Spring Leg will be none other than World Champion SwitchingQuylthulg. Good luck!

Penguincw: Alright, congrats to the winners, especially <Switch> for winning (again), and <Annie K.> for hosting.

Very stacked lineup, as I see the 10 finalists have combined to qualify about 70 times previous (don't forget to correct the typo from Championship 2011 <cg>).

For historic purposes, here are the final standings: http://web.archive.org/web/20150405... (not an 18+ link, trust me).

P.S. I also kept track of the pictures that appear after clicking "Cash in Tickets", and here's what I found:

- Bookiecongratulations11 (a picture of a man smiling): 25-131 cbs (53 times)

- Bookiecongratulations2 (a picture of a Capablanca 20 being put into a pink wallet): 25-143 cbs (61 times)

- Bookiecongratulations4 (a picture of a man smoking): 317-474 (3 times)

- Bookiecongratulations12 (a picture of money being put into a wallet): 151-219 cbs (5 times)

- Bookiecongratulations5 (a series of Lasker 50s): 217-230 cbs (2 times)

- Bookiecongratulations1 (a picture of coins in a blue dish like tray): 3-24 cbs (252 times)

- Bookiecongratulations9 (a picture of coins on a wooden table): 3-24 cbs (231 times)

Is there supposed to be some algorithm for the pictures, or is it random? And how many different types are there (I've spotted 8, with 7 listed)?

chessgames.com: We have emailed the top three places their The Chessgames Store gift certificates.

Note to <Winter> — the email we have on file for you at rocketmail.com does not work. You will have to go to your preferences page and change your email before we can send you your $25 prize.

chessgames.com: <Penguincw> they are supposed to be in accordance to the size of the money being awarded. There is some randomness involved as well. For example, for a payoff of less than 25 chessbucks we pick randomly between this pathetic change pile

http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag...

and what amounts to a tip for lunch

http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag...

As the payoffs get higher, the graphics become more alluring.

At some point they stop being random: for the high rollers who win 1000-2000 chessbucks they get this powerful image:

http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag...

For 2001-5000 you get treated to meeting the bookie himself at his favorite Italian joint:

http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag...

And when you win over 5000 you've truly joined the "Whale's Club"

Apr-06-15  scout118: Chessgames.com

Based on prior years' results, I was competing with the impression that the other 7 runner-ups would all win a free one-year Chessgames membership and automatically qualify for the next championship.

Just a token value, but would have been nice.

Here's last year's post:
Chessgames Bookie chessforum

Was there on omission in your announcement?

chessgames.com: <scout118> Originally there were only 3 prizes for the Championship leg for places 1-3 but two or three years ago we started the practice of giving memberships to the top 10.

We decided that this is a bad idea and canceled that practice.

The reasoning is this: that once you get into the top 10 for a Championship Leg, it becomes much easier to get into the top 10 for next year's Championship. Not to say it's a cinch, but you're automatically qualified, and a lot of people who are qualified don't even play. So if we keep handing out memberships to the top-10, there becomes this small clique of players who effectively are granted lifetime memberships.

I'm very sorry.

Apr-06-15  scout118: <chessgames.com:>

You decided it is a bad idea and cancelled the practice - just now, at the conclusion of this fine event and at the time of giving the expected awards?!?

I have no quarrel with your justifications and would probably concur, but if you're deciding to change the award structure only now - after we've given the time and effort to win, then shouldn't you apply the new measures for next year's "championship leg" so everyone's aware beforehand?

This doesn't seem to be fair play. Was there any previous discussion or notifications from chessgams that I'm missing?

Apr-06-15  Beholder: I'm afraid I have to concur with <scout118>'s opinion. That wasn't exactly fair of CG.com to change the practice before the leg's conclusion without any kind of notice.

I was under the impression that, aside from the first place obviously, all other spots in the Top-10 will get more or less equal prizes. Consequently, I've made no effort to prevent <Sneaky> from overtaking me into the 3rd place.

Had I known otherwise, I would certainly have made at least some effort to place bets in the last few days, having nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Apr-06-15  scout118: <Chessgames>
Even Switch was under the impression that more prizes are available during the Winter Leg. Don't spoil the fun!

<Mar-25-15 SwitchingQuylthulg: Why do people play during the other legs, trying to beat the other 1K starters? Statistically, any given player starting with c$1,000 has better chances of winning a prize during the Winter Leg than during, say, the Summer Leg; since there are more prizes available, this shouldn't be too surprising.>
