jnpope: Ok, I added the six additional Zukertort games that I already had in my database. I welcome any other games from this event.

rhmberger: Subject Jose Antonio Jover ?

  rhmberger: And Andres Vazquez
He was born in Cuba, emigrated to Mexico, became a Mexican citizen and champion and returned to Cuba as Mexican ambassador. Shouldn't he be listed as Mexican?

jnpope: Added the Mexican Nationality to Andres Vazquez.

I don't know anything about Dr. Jover. Does the "D." stand for "Don"?

Blackburne vs J Jover, 1891 (kibitz #4) indicates his first name was Jorge. In either case do we have source information?

jnpope: I've got a señor doctor don Antonio Jover, surgeon, born in Madrid, Spain, c1855, living in Havana, Cuba, making a few trips to the US (1913 and 1927).

And in <Jose Raul Capablanca: A Chess Biography>, Miguel A. Sánchez gives "The draw was made by José A. Jover, another old timer of the club" as having played Capablanca, on p509.

Perhaps two different men that got combined into the same PID?

rhmberger: Yes, I think D stands for Don (as in Sir).

-<El Pablo Morphy>, v1 n2, 15 November 1891, p28

Leaves no doubt. Blackburne definitely played Antonio Jover. Now we need to run down José.

jnpope: Got to watch out for that "D." in Spanish and the "M." in French names.
Jun-26-25
Premium Chessgames Member
jnpope: I'll work on disentangling the two. I suspect Sánchez is probably correct on Capablanca's opponent.

rhmberger: And Capablanca vs J Jover, 1909 Diario de la Marina, 1909.09.15, p.5 only says Dr. Jover https://prensahistorica.mcu.es/en/c...

jnpope: Then perhaps Sánchez was just wrong.

rhmberger: Just for the fun of the D:

  Tabanus: Swiss Championship (1952)

Xtab & four more games added (CG had 31). I removed "International" - after reading they had invited foreign players to the Swiss Ch's for the last 18 years.

Jun-27-25  stone free or die: <Tab> not sure I agree with the new naming scheme, given that <SSZ (1952)> actually refers to the tournament as

<tournoi international de Zürich>

https://www.kunstschach.ch/docs/ssz... (p129)

Tabanus: Well I'm not sure either. Perhaps just <Zurich (1952)>?
Jun-27-25

jnpope: <Tabanus: The newspapers also have "Internationales Meisterturnier in Zürich" and "53. Schweizer Schachturnier in Zürich".>

If both were used, why not <Swiss Championship, Zurich (1952)>? Following the "Event_Name, City" format:

7th Intercollegiate Cup, New York (1898)
13th DSB Congress, Hanover (1902)

I think it still works even without an ordinal event name.

jnpope: Added 14 games, xtab and write-up for:
Ferris - Tatnall Restricted Match (1887/88)

Perhaps a match format ahead of it's time. I wonder which 21 openings would be selected in 2025?

Jun-27-25  stone free or die: <<Tab> Perhaps just <Zurich (1952)>?>

This works for me, with the write-up mentioning the details for the blended tournament.

If we had a series of <Swiss ch> we would always have the tournament properly placed in the <prev>/<next> sequencing no matter what the name.

Jun-27-25  stone free or die: Though, looking at it I do see <Tab>'s earlier point:

Tournament Index search: "swiss"

E.g. <Swiss Championship> 1995 has Gallagher #1, with Pelletier winning the actual tn title.

We also have 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2012.

But it's <Swiss Championship (International)> in 2005.

Susan Freeman: <MissScarlett: Has anyone been prosecuted for infringement? I suppose <cg> is in an awkward situation - technically, the site is a commercial enterprise, but it doesn't make any money once allowance is made for <Miss Susan>'s travel expenses.>

LOLOL.
I repeat: I take zero compensation from CG. According to US tax laws, one could categorize it as a hobby. LOL
