Jan-23-16  paavoh: <...escaping his natural position at the bottom...>

Conclusions drawn only from current ratings be damned, look at the experience too. Despite the slip today.

I wonder if any one in the Group B will accumulate a resume comparable to Dreev, not even Nisipeanu comes close.

Jan-23-16  Mr. V: Why would anyone predict Dreev to finish at the bottom? He's one of the rating favorites.
Jan-23-16  GerMalaz: I think he was playing on last names, not rating.
Jan-24-16  Imran Iskandar: Anne Haast has avoided a reverse Caruana, thankfully! Not that it makes her situation much better.
Jan-24-16  waustad: And now today's first winner is Anne Haast.

WannaBe: Ms Haast's on a roll!!
Jan-25-16  waustad: Bok turns 21 today. I have no idea what laws are like in the Netherlands. The closest I've been was visiting Luxembourg briefly in the 1970s, but it is a big deal many places.
Jan-26-16  gokusano: Woweee! All decisive games for Haast! Don't she know that a draw is a half point?
Jan-26-16  epistle: Her combativeness will get her a lot of invites to top tournaments from hereon.
Jan-26-16  paavoh: <I think he was playing on last names, not rating> That's right! Only now I see that three of those with a double vowel in their last name were at the bottom, and by extension, Dreev should have been there too. I, of all people, should have seen this sooner :-)

Dreev's protection was the <pronunciation> of his last name. In "Haast", "Admiraal", "Foreest" you actually have long vowels. In "Dreev", there is an unwritten "y" sound between the first and the second "e". :)

Jan-26-16  Mr. V: Ah, I see. Such humor is far too subtle for my American attention span [suddenly slips on a banana peel].
Jan-26-16  waustad: <paavoh> For the lowest rated player to have 2 wins, including one against Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu, is a good showing. She's paired up, often by a lot every round.
Jan-27-16  dumbgai: I miss the 3-group format of this tournament. The B group used to be a very strong tournament with mostly 2600+ GMs and sometimes 2700. Look at 2010, for instance: Corus Group B (2010). Or 2009: Corus Group B (2009).

Those tournaments each had several players that could be somewhat competitive in the A group. In this year's lineup, all but maybe a couple would get absolutely clobbered in the A group.

Jan-28-16  JohnBoy: Sevian is doing quite well - certainly playing beyond his rating.
Jan-28-16  belgradegambit: Yes, after a very slow start Sevian starting to pile up wins.

perfidious: It may well be rough sledding when the lad faces Dreev and Adhiban, though.
Jan-29-16  JohnBoy: Indeed, <perf>. Looks like Dreev was kind of a brick wall for the kid.

WannaBe: If Dreev and Adhiban end in a tie score, Adhiban would win on head-to-head tie breaker.
Jan-29-16  Mr. V: Yes, but the top two will likely both get invited to the Tata Steel A Group next year.

Furthermore, it looks like Dreev might have it easier with his schedule the last 2 games.

Jan-29-16  Mr. V: Unfortunately for my guy, Safarli will have to face Nisipeanu with Black. His chances of even getting 2nd place look slim :(
Jan-29-16  Mr. V: My mistake, Safarli will have White against Nisipeanu.
Jan-30-16  JohnBoy: Sevian has come to a complete halt - and has to face Adhiban. Good luck!
Jan-30-16  dumbgai: Haast is 12/12 at decisive games. Unfortunately for her, most of those haven't gone her way.

Wow, impressive. Much better than Nisipeanu, who's only 2/12 (j/k).
