Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
European Club Cup (2014)

The 30th European Club Cup was a 7-round Swiss team tournament played at Euskalduna Congress Centre in Bilbao, Spain, 14-20 September 2014, at exactly the same time as Bilbao Masters (2014). Fifty-two clubs and 367 players took part, including defending champions G-Team Novy Bor (Czech Republic), which mustered Wojtaszek, Navara, Harikrishna, Laznicka, Sasikiran and Hracek. Each match was played over six boards, with 2 points for a team win and 1 point for a draw. Time control: 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 more minutes till the end of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move one. Tournament director: Dirk de Ridder. Chief arbiter: Josu Mena.

SOCAR of Azerbaijan (Giri, Korobov, Wang Hao, Topalov, Radjabov, Mamedyarov, Safarli, Adams) won with 14/14, ahead of G-Team Novy Bor (2nd with 12/14) and Russian Malakhite (Karjakin, Grischuk, et al., 3rd with 11/14).

Sep-17-14  FairyPromotion: It should be pointed out that ATM there are 6 different players over <2790> on the live ratings list, all of them from different countries. I think this is great for chess!
Sep-17-14  makaveli52: Yeah, Caruana and Nakamura are playing the next two Grand Prix events in Baku and Tashkent. But maybe having American citizenship and playing in Tehran is worse.
Sep-17-14  muradov: There have been 4 rounds so far. How come some players have 5-6 different games listed?
Sep-17-14  RubinSteinitz: <SirRuthless: Also my favorite event iof the year, the Tal Memorial, will be stripped of many star players due to it's being right in-between the two GPs. It almost seems to be by design. The West Asian chess mafia has spoken.>

I totally agree with you Sir. It seems there is a new gang in town. The old and respected masters are falling by the wayside. Driven off the road to avoid being trampled by fat wallet corporations after a name of their own. A shame. The Tal name should take president over any other venue.

Sep-18-14  Chess for life: MVL is playing the Scotch against Michael Adams...Interesting coincidence, what with the current political situation in the UK!
Sep-18-14  Jim Bartle: Nice catch!
Sep-18-14  makaveli52: Nice mate in Blomqvist-Nepomniachtchi.
Sep-18-14  boz: Caruana seems to be winning again.
Sep-18-14  Strongest Force: Fab is as "bad" as he wants to be. He is chewing-up gm's like pacman. He's a bad mother-f-er! He will be first to go over 2900.
Sep-18-14  makaveli52: Caruana is the new Botvinnik.
Sep-18-14  boz: Caruana is the new bad.
Sep-18-14  notyetagm: European Club Cup (2014)

Caruana wins again.

Sep-18-14  notyetagm: Someone at chessbomb just said that after today's win Caruana is just 20(!) points behind Carlsen on the live rating list.

Unreal. Carlsen used to have like an 80-90 point gap over World #2.

Sep-18-14  Absentee: <notyetagm: Unreal. Carlsen used to have like an 80-90 point gap over World #2.>

Unless I have some serious long-term memory issues, Carlsen's largest gap over n.2, at the time Aronian, was around 60 points.

His biggest one on an official list was 74, in October 2013.

On the Live Rating list I was thinking Aronian was around 2802 when Carlsen hit 2882 or something back in April, which is 80 points.

Yeah, I was talking about live ratings, but I seem to remember Aronian was around 2830 at the time. Does 2700chess or some similar site keep a snapshot of past live ratings?

Sep-18-14  boz: Hard to believe Aronian is number 6 on the live list. The times they are a-changin'.
Sep-18-14  notyetagm: <boz: Hard to believe Aronian is number 6 on the live list. The times they are a-changin'.>

Aronian has done fairly poorly since the Candidate Tournament. And by that I mean played well below 2800-level.

Aronian has not been the same since he lost that first round game in the Candidates against Anand: Anand vs Aronian, 2014.

Sep-18-14  boz: <notyetagm> He's still young so that could change overnight but, yes, Aronian has definitely slipped. Still super strong, of course, but missing the finer edge.

Good luck!

Sep-18-14  latvalatvian: I can see Grisnick is following the iron bound rules set down by Steinitz

top40chess.com does , there is a bar on top which you could scroll for historical ratings .

Sep-18-14  anandrulez: <Chess for life: MVL is playing the Scotch against Michael Adams...Interesting coincidence, what with the current political situation in the UK!> And it would have so much more ironic had it been a Scottish GM playing Scotch vs Mickey . But the fact is Scotland doesn't have good GM's , one reason why I think the should really be happy being part of the UK / Britain .
