offramp: The previous Men's Olympiad was in 2022. They were held in Chennai (the birthplace of both Chicken and Squatter Madras).

Atterdag: Well, then there will be one positive thing to say about Hungary.

offramp: As I said, last time <the winners were
1st UZB
2nd ARM
3rd IND.\>

Some websites reckon that the winners this year could be
1. CHINA
2. INDIA
3. USA.

No way! I have a feeling that none of those three will appear in the final table.

I reckon UZB and ARMENIA will be there; possible winners. It's possible that HUN could be on the podium.

Sally Simpson: China to win if Pang Bo is playing. Team St.Louis 2nd. Hungary 3rd but only if they field the Polgar sisters. (David Howell to win the prize for best game of the Olympiad.)

MissScarlett: No <Peter Leko> on commentary. I fear the worst.

Sally Simpson: Actually Hungary could be a good bet. They have finished in the top three on 12 occasions, winning it three times including the last time it was held in Budapest. That was in 1926 and that was without the Polgar sisters!

They finished 8th last time but they were without Rapport and Leko. (and of course any of the Polgar sisters.)

Re: Commentary. Judit Polgar did commentary in the 2022 Olympiad, she may do more again this time and Thank You Miss Scarlet for giving me a legitimate reason to mention at least one of the Polgar sisters.

Troller: I see that Rapport is once again listed as representing Hungary on the FIDE site - so indeed Hungary may have a shot at gold, especially if they actually get Leko to play. Judit's last classical game was 10 years ago, she can probably be discounted though.

US has by far the highest rated players. never mind most of them used to represent other countries. But as our dear <Offramp> points out, last time they did not even make the podium, same as China btw.

France in fact has a decent team; if young Maurizzi has his breakthrough event here then they could make metal as well.

Sep-04-24  fabelhaft: <Actually Hungary could be a good bet. They have finished in the top three on 12 occasions, winning it three times>

I wouldn't bet on Hungary. Leko hasn't played classical chess in many years, his last event seems to be Bundesliga five years ago where he didn't win any of his games but lost with white to Ragger. Then he played a rapid event four years ago and finished last.

With Leko as their second highest rated player, Hungary looks weak compared to for example India, with Vidit (who won both his games against Nakamura in the Candidates) as their fourth strongest.

But there are always some surprises in the Olympiad. For India Erigaisi isn't that tested against the top players and Gukesh is thinking a bit about the title match. For China Ding is not all that reliable.

My guess is that the US team will win, it looks very stable. Aronian has lots of top results in Olympiads and could win many matches for the team on fourth board.

Troller: I see on the preliminary starting list that Firouzja is not listed for France - so still a strong team but perhaps not podium contenders.

Hungary is no.9 after ratings, so gold does seem a little far-fetched.

Shirov plays second board for Spain! I guess long time since he has been anything but first board for any country. David Anton is placed ahead of him.

Naiditsch now represents Bulgaria. Is that his fourth country?

offramp: Ding Liren is stuck in a cleft stick. He is <obliged> to play on board 1....unless he is as sick as a parrot. The World Champion <MUST> play on board 1.

Ding Liren is required to grasp the poisoned cup - the vessel with the figure of a pestle; the nick on the muzzle of the chalice from the palace.

Pang Bo will be <"first reserve">. I think The People's Committee want to select Pang Bo. I expect Pang Bo to play on board 4 and score a triumphant 6 or 7 out of 8.

If Ding Liren plays, he'll score +1 or possibly +2.

MissScarlett: <Leko hasn't played classical chess in many years, his last event seems to be Bundesliga five years ago where he didn't win any of his games but lost with white to Ragger.>

<cg>'s coverage of national league events is patchy, to say the least.

Leko's last rated games were in June 2023: https://ratings.fide.com/profile/70...

Ratings do not determine board numbers, of course, so it'll be interesting to see where and how often he plays.

Troller: Leko is placed on board 2 behind Rapport. The interesting thing will be to see how soon and how many drawing references will be posted on this page in connection with him.
Sep-04-24  fabelhaft: <Leko's last rated games were in June 2023>

Only two rated games in four years though, doesn't inspire all that much confidence.

- Oldest players (Women): Pauline Marian Woodward (Guernsey), b. 1940 & Rani Hamid (Bangladesh), b. 1944.

- Youngest player (Open): James Javon (Grenada), b. 2015.

Atterdag: In the Speed Chess Championship in Paris you have probably noticed that Carlsen beat Niemann convincingly in their match - foreseen as sensational by journalists! Some good games in that match btw.

So today (Sunday) it's Carlsen vs. Firouzja for the first/second and Nakamura vs. Niemann for the third/fourth.

Apparenty the event is of no interest to CG.

<cg> notes the consolation match took place yesterday (Saturday).

Sep-08-24  Bobby Fiske: <Atterdag: In the Speed Chess Championship in Paris you have probably noticed that Carlsen beat Niemann…Apparently the event is of no interest to CG.> The wrong player won. Besides there is still unfinished work to be done on some 19th Century Staunton match.

MissScarlett: As it happens, I am currently concerned with this match: http://www.edochess.ca/matches/m826...

To my knowledge, <chess.com> do not make bulk downloads of games readily available, and <TWIC> is sleeping. Please point to an alternative source.

Sep-08-24  Bobby Fiske: -As a chess.com Premium member, I can search and select games by any player and date, and there is a mass download option, too. (Can't verify it without access to my PC, though).

Since the Paris games are one on one matches, you get all the relevant games between the two in one grab. The Magnus -Niemann match went past midnight, so you have to search for 6+7th Sept.
