Kibitzer's Corner
May-07-24  Olavi: When Mestel won the British in 1988, in his victory speech he thanked the Hastings town council for their hospitality. Nice of him, except he had just spent two weeks playing in Blackpool.

As reported by Danny King in New in Chess 7/1989.

May-07-24  Olavi: In 1988 Mestel wrote the report for NIC himself. He did not consider it necessary to mention that. Next year King did it on his behalf.
May-07-24  Muttley101: Olavi, do you know the reason Mestel was deselected from The Glorney Cup England team? It's another British ch story.
May-07-24  Olavi: <Muttley101> No, I do not know. He was not a professional player. Perhaps they wanted to give the pros preference?
May-07-24  Olavi: He had a teaching job at the uni. In Germany such things happened in the earlier years - but this is pure speculation.

Sally Simpson: The only thing I have close to Mestel is planning to go to a tournament in Motherwell (about 40 miles from Edinburgh) I took the wrong train and ended up in Newcastle, a completely different country.

And once as captain I dragged 5 players including myself to an away league match on the other side of the city when we should have been playing at home. We lost 6-0 by default.

Also...I organised a weekend tournament. I gave out the wrong date. On the Friday night there was me, two controllers and two players to play a five round tournament. The two players played one game that night. The winner got the trophy and I had the weekend off to watch the football.

May-29-24  Muttley101: <Olavi> The Glorney Cup was a junior event (I don't know if it still in existence), with teams of juniors from different nations playing each other. So, no pros, no professional obligations. Another time- the story is hilarious but probably not for Chessgames pages :D Sorry for the teaser :D
