May-17-23  jphamlore: Y Yu vs D Mastrovasilis, 2023

Future puzzle of the day.

May-19-23  jphamlore: No one will remember this, but the ending of Niemann - Yilmaz shows the beauty in chess of knowing the technique to draw. Yilmaz playing basically on increment perfectly illustrated many of the concepts of say Dvoretsky's chapter on rook endgames. He may have calculated the drawing plan a far back as when the endgame was two rooks and a minor piece.

This broadening of endgame skill may be a positive reason for declines in ratings at the very top. We are blessed with both endgame manuals and endgame strategy manuals that if drilled into children learning chess should somewhat automatically produce players after cognitive maturity in their mid-20s who can play technical endgames at a level previously only all-time greats such as Lasker, Capablanca, Smyslov, Fischer, Carlsen, etc. could attain.

May-25-23  greed and death: Last-round games aren't up yet, so in the interim...

Erigaisi won sole 1st with 6.5/9, a half-point ahead of 7 other players

May-28-23  Atking: The last game of Erigaisi was it a dragon defense against Niemann?

beatgiant: <jphamlore> Is this the game? Niemann vs M Yilmaz, 2023 How about posting a kibitz there pointing out what specifically you thought was so impressive? I played through it and don't really see it.

As for <decline in ratings at the very top>, what specifically do you mean? When were they higher?

May-30-23  ultrausurper: Last round games still not up?
