Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
European Championship (2004)

The 5th European Championship was a 13-round Swiss tournament held in Antalya Province, Turkey, 15-30 May 2004, with rest days on 19 and 26 May and a day for playoffs on 30 May. The venue was supposed to be Nautilus Hotel in Beldibi (Kemer district), but after a power supply incident on the night before play began it was moved to Justiniano Hotel in Belek (Serik district) on the other side of Antalya City. Only 74 players (36 GMs & 17 IMs) took part, as for some time it had not been clear whether the event would collide with other events such as the World Championship tournament in Libya. The top 12 players (apparently excl. Ivanchuk) would qualify for the 2005/06 World Championship cycle. Time control: 90 minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Prize fund: 45,000 euros. First prize 8,000, 2nd prize 5,000, 3rd prize 4,000 euros. Chief arbiter: Werner Stubenvoll. Play began each day at 3 pm. N games played: 480 Classical + 25 Rapid = 505.

Vassily Ivanchuk won the event after beating Nikolic in two Rapid (15 min + 10 sec) playoff games (Ivanchuk vs P Nikolic, 2004 and P Nikolic vs Ivanchuk, 2004). Aronian won the playoff for 3rd place, and Naiditsch, Agrest, Milov and Asrian won their matches for WC qualification - in which Kempinski did not take part - see 5th EU-ch playoff (2004).
