Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Amsterdam IBM (1981)

"The IBM company's tournament series, which has a significant history and long traditions, has — according to the news — ended with this one. As a farewell, the organizers invited top grandmasters who were prominent figures in IBM tournaments in recent years. The Elo average was 2572 (category 13), so this event can rightly be considered one of the great chess events of the year. The event was won by Jan Timman — quickly forgetting his weaker performance in Moscow — the pride of the Dutch. He was in the lead throughout. To our delight, Grandmaster Portisch finished close behind, fighting back after a bad start. The same can be said of world champion Karpov. Both of them finished in 2nd-3rd place with victories in the last round. We have known Hort for a long time to be a reliable, experienced competitor, and he performed well this time too. Kavalek also played in good form, while the forever young ex-world champion Smyslov proved again after Moscow that he is "an old man, not an old man"! Ree's successful performance was a surprise, but Miles, Ljubojevic, and especially Polugaevsky's lagging behind were disappointing. The Soviet grandmaster did not win a single game!" (Sakkélet, transl.)

Eggman: After starting off the tournament with two consecutive losses, Ljubojevic goes on to score a win and eight draws, the draws all being less than 25 moves, three of them less than 20 moves. This is something I don't miss about chess from the pre-internet era.
Oct-09-22  Chessius the Messius: Ljubo kept it precisely at 23,5454545 moves per game.
