The tournament took place at the Club Espanol in Rosario, Argentina, immediately after the 8th Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires (which was held from August 21 to September 19). It was organised by the Federación Santafecina de Ajedrez. Rosario is the largest city in Santa Fé province, and has a population of over one million. It is located 300 km northwest of Buenos Aires on the Parana River with a good link to the capital. Petrov secured the win with a draw against Eliskases in Round 6. The top finishers came straight from the Olympiad, where Petrov scored +8 -0 =11 for Latvia, Eliskases +7 -2 =5 for Germany, and Mikenas +10 -5 =4 for Lithuania. Petrov and Mikenas went after Rosario back to Europe, whereas Eliskases remained in Argentina the rest of his life (except for a stay in Austria in 1976). The last five players were from Rosario. | Jun-17-14 | | GumboGambit: With all the European chess masters that stayed in Argentina after the outbreak of WWII, it is a shame that Petrov did not. The Latvian was sent to the Gulag by the Soviets, and died a few years later. |

They survived the war, but he paid the price- death in the gulag. |
