May-23-14 | | The Last Straw: Second! |
May-24-14 | | MountainMatt: Darn it! I wanted to be second! |
May-24-14
 | | perfidious: Twentyleventh! |
May-24-14 | | waustad: Tomorrow will probably decide since China is playing India. India is ahead on tiebreaks, so China needs a win.

May-25-14 | | Jamboree: Why do all the non-Muslim female players have to wear Islamic head coverings? (See the reports on Chessbase.) It's insulting and absurd. If I was on the Chinese (or Vietnamese or whatever) team, I would refuse to wear it. If the team gets expelled, then all the better. Repressive regimes need to be isolated and not be blessed with international events and respect. Too many FIDE events take place in totalitarian nations. The players should rebel. |
May-25-14 | | RedShield: There's no indication on this page as to where this event is taking place, but I assume it's somewhere in the arbitrary region known as Asia. |
May-25-14 | | waustad: It's taking place in Tabriz Iran. |
May-25-14 | | RedShield: A place arbitrarily known as Tabriz, Iran. |
May-25-14 | | waustad: I remember seeing Magnus Carlsen playing in silk robes in China too. If you look, the teams from India and China are wearing much more flamboyant colors than the Iranians. |
May-25-14
 | | HeMateMe: They treat the head scarf rule pretty seriously. better to wear the scarf on your head than not have a head. Jordan is playing, but not Israel. I wonder if the Israelis were invited, but turned it down? If FIDE is a neutral body, they should demand that Iran invite ALL Asian nations, or they can't host the tournament. |
May-25-14 | | RedShield: I thought Israel was (arbitrarily) in Europe. |
May-25-14 | | waustad: They consider a lot of Asian nations to be in Europe. They even held the European Championships in Asia Minor. The definition for these purposes was Zones: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7. What all of these zones are can be found here: http://www.fide.com/component/handb... |
May-25-14
 | | HeMateMe: Oh, that's right. Israel plays in Euro team championships. Makes sense. |
May-25-14 | | waustad: Tan Zhongyi won her game and the others drew, so now China leads in match points. Perhaps some of those who took quick draws today, like Tania Sachdev drawing with white in 16 moves, may wish they'd have gone for more. |
May-25-14 | | waustad: The top 10 ratings in the tournament all belong to players from China or India. In the top 6, only Dronavalli Harika is not from China. |
May-26-14 | | waustad: Today is a rest day for the women: http://chess-results.com/tnr135082.... |
May-26-14 | | ossipossi: @<Jamboree> & <HeHateMe>: Queens go veiled too.
FIDE is not in Europe, neither onto Earth, I am afraid. Maybe Mars, (doctor-)Who knows?! |
May-27-14 | | waustad: Congrats to the team from China for a dominating performance, culminating with a 4-0 sweep in the final round. |
May-27-14 | | Whitehat1963: I'm guessing Yifan Hou doesn't feel the need to prove anything here? |
May-28-14 | | waustad: Now I see Asian Nations Cup 2014 - Women (standard2) with more games going on. Is it a double RR? There are more games on now on chessbomb.
http://chess-results.com/tnr135734.... |
May-28-14 | | waustad: <whitehat>What would be the point, unless she played for the open team? Their whole team is already higher rated than everybody in the tournament except for Harika Dronavalli. I just noticed that one of the players for Iran B is 10 years old. |
Jun-01-14 | | technical draw: Imagine a tournament taking place in the Vatican and forcing all muslims to wear a crucifix. The world would explode. Vito Corleone is a punk next to the muslim groups. |
