Carlos Enrique Guimard was Tournament Director. (5) During and after the tournament the grandmasters held simultaneous exhibitions. The one held by Karpov after the tournament is mentioned here (try to read it): http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_T3uK8_azX...

Pairings and round dates are from Clarin (thanks to User: Fusilli). The rounds were also covered in several Dutch newspapers (thanks to Timman), and in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.

offramp: Odd to see three westerners finish so decisively above Karpov. A superb result for Larsen; I wonder what his TPR was?

perfidious: In those halcyon days of Karpov's reign as titleholder, it was something of a surprise when he lost a tournament game, not to mention when he failed to win an event.

Fusilli: Kavalek drew only two games!
Apr-12-16  Howard: Ljubo was from Yugoslavia, so he wasn't part of the West back then.

This was one of Larsen's last great tournament victories.

Probably his last one was at Niksic (sp) 1983, in which he finished second in a very strong field.

Care to guess who placed first ?

Jun-25-16  diagonal: <A superb result for Larsen; I wonder what his TPR was?> According to chessmetrics (historical ELO by Jeff Sonas), Larsen's tournament triumphs at 2nd and 3rd Clarin, played in Buenos Aires in 1979 and 1980 respectively, were indeed the (statistically) best performances by Bent Larsen. Of course, this legendary player, awarded the Grandmaster title in 1956, is spontaneously remembered first for his stunning tournament wins in the late 1960s; afterwards (don't mention Fischer) in the 1970s and early 1980s his results were somehow more volatile, still showing brilliant achievements, ie. winning the strong Interzonal at Biel in 1976 outright (above Portisch, Petrosian, Tal, Smyslov, Hübner, R. Byrne, etc.), or the mentioned Clarin invitation tournaments, sometimes forgotten.

May-27-17  siggemannen: Some really nice pictures in the last post, not just the stock "sitting in front of the chessboard pondering your next move while pieces are mirrored in your glasses". Thank you for the link, <diagonal>

perfidious: Fine set of photos in <diagonal>'s link.

As an aside, in an elite event today, a TPR of 2731 would merit notice only as a subpar performance by one of the top players, so much have top FIDE ratings inflated, but it was quite enough to come out winner in this top-class event from 1980.

  Fusilli: <offramp> <14 Giardelli,Sergio Carlos 2300 +70>

The tournament was a nice opportunity for IM Sergio Giardelli, who passed away two years ago at 60. Even in last place, he performed better than expectations. After all, he was over 200 points below in Elo than everyone else. He was a very nice guy, loved by everyone.

  Tabanus: <Larsen's TPR was 2731>

Considering the rating inflation, that's a 2900+ perf. by today's standards, am I right? ;)
