The 4th European Championship was a 207-player 13-round Swiss tournament held at the Marin Princess Hotel in Silivri, Istanbul Province, Turkey, 30 May - 14 June 2003, with rest days on 4 and 9 June, and a day for playoffs on 14 June. No less than 152 GMs participated, of which 49 were rated >2600. Two players (Ivanchuk and Grischuk) were rated >2700. Among the men were also a 13-year-old girl, Kateryna Lagno. The players were once again requested to stay in certain hotels. The first 39 players (excl. seeded players, and five players from the previous European championship) would qualify for the 2003/04 World Championship. Time control: 90 minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Prize fund: $192,000 (minus FIDE and ECU taxes), a considerable increase from 2002. First prize $32,000, 2nd prize $24,000, 3rd prize $16,000. Chief arbiter: Viron Tsorbatzoglou. Play began each day at 3 pm. N games played: 1337 Classical + 2 Rapid = 1339. Zurab Azmaiparashvili won the event with 9.5/13. Malakhov beat Graf 1½-½ in the Rapid (15 min + 10 sec) tiebreak match for 2nd place, see 4th EU-ch playoff (2003). The four 8/13 players with worst Buchholz score (Fedorov, Tiviakov, Istratescu, Inarkiev) were supposed to have a playoff for two places in the WC tournament, but this did not happen because they felt that all 32 players tied on 8 points should be involved. Inarkiev and Tiviakov did take part in the FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (2004).

This Europeanchampionship is played in the accelerated new timer of Fide while the unification WC-matches is back to its "old" longer timer of 2 hours for 40 moves. Either weird or double standards. This timer causes much more blunders in the games. If people like to see players making blunders look at my (fast) games on internet! |

| Jun-09-03 | | Bears092: Refutor - You could search using just the ECO and type in 2003 for the year, then pick out the ones that are from 4th IECC. It'll be a lot easier to do that than search through all 700 of these games. |
