Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-20-13  waustad: Thanks! It was an easy day for Natalia P. and Anna U. as Stefana Milutinovic and Elena Boric were no shows. Boric has a history of this since she didn't make it to 2 rounds at the Vienna Chess Ladies tournament. I don't know if they were late or just didn't really plan on showing up. I got the name Stefana Milutinovic from chessbomb, but she isn't even mentioned on the chess-results list of players. With an odd number of teams, somebody will get a bye each round. The Austrian team ASVOE Pamhagen got the first one.
Oct-21-13  virginmind: Good start for the Romanian team Politehnica Iasi ('Antibiotice' was recently included in its name, as a local sponsor). Good luck against Ugra! - Natalia please don't go too hard against your opponent today ;)

Yifan and Koneru team mates in a European competition...now that's what I call globalization :)

Oct-21-13  waustad: Tomorrow is Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo vs Ugra. That could decide who wins it all, though there are several other teams that could have a say in that. As far as board prizes go, how does having no shows affect that? Do they use points, percent of performance rating? There have already been 3 in the tournament, though the first round against Ugra may be all that matters since they were all by bottom ranking teams and they aren't likely to play the top later in a Swiss, even this small a Swiss.
Oct-22-13  Blunderdome: Wooooo, rooting for World Champion Hou Yifan here!
Oct-22-13  Blunderdome: (Yes, I know it's actually a team event.)
Oct-22-13  waustad: <blunder>I'm a fan of some people in Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo too, but I keep thinking it is a little too much like rooting for the Yankees. I am still a fan of Pia Cramling and have been since she was the teen on the cover of Chess Life over 30 years ago. Since then I've followed her games and am very interested in what she has done, particularly in the Sicilian.
Oct-22-13  waustad: I did not expect a sweep. Wow.

Natalia Pogonina: One for all, all for one :)
Oct-23-13  Calar: Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo is very close to winning this. They're comprised of 3 highest rated women players at the time (barring J. Polgar) - Yifan Hou, Koneru and A. Muzychuk, with Cramling and Skripchenko rounding out the team.

Monte Carlo has already played, and won against most of their strongest rivals - Mika Chess Club, Ugra and SHSM Nashe Nasledie. Tomorrow, they face last strong obstacle to securing the title - CS Politechnica-Antibiotice Iasi headed by K. Lahno.

I'm expecting very suspenseful fight for 2nd place, though. Perhaps Russian champion Ugra (Ushenina, Pogonina, Kovanova, Romanko, Shadrina) has the best chance, although they've yet to play another strong Russian team Nashe Nasledie (Kosteniuk, Gunina, Kovalevskaya, Girya, Savina). Their encounter is on next round.

Oct-23-13  waustad: I'm a little confused about ASVOE Pamhagen, where they seem to be playing with 3 players where their strongest is obviously their coach, who isn't playing. I'm sure there is a story there that most of us will never hear.
Oct-24-13  virginmind: Irina Bulmaga (born 1993) is on 3.4/4 points, along with Hou Yifan and Humpy Koneru. In the 5th round Politehnica-Antibiotice Iasi will face Cercle d'Echecs Monte Carlo and I hope they will offer good fighting chess.
Oct-24-13  waustad: OK, here's the story. I'm posting it in German because the alternative is a machine translated version: Im Damenbewerb ist Pamhagen in der ersten Runde spielfrei und bekommt dafür einen Mannschaftspunkt.

Natalia Pogonina: Deja vu feeling: this is the ECC, not Russian Superfinal, but the faces (or back, in my case) are familiar :)

Oct-24-13  Paint My Dragon: <Natalia> Nice photo! Away from the board, Valentina Gunina always appears to be happy and smiling. Is this her way? Can you tell us something about her? I would say she probably gets least coverage of all the top Russian chess players.

HeMateMe: When will see the clash of the titans, Hou/Koneru?
Oct-25-13  waustad: Dominyka Batkovskyte continues her string of decisive games. This time getting outplayed in the endgame by Pia Cramling. Sometimes the extra 30 years of experience helps.
Oct-26-13  waustad: The down side for a small Swiss is the kinds of matchups we see in the final round. The top 2 teams have already played all of the other strong teams so they are playing bottom enders.
Oct-28-13  weisyschwarz: Wow! What a barn-burner!
