Apr-26-25
 | | offramp: I am glad that this event now has its own page. |
|
Apr-26-25
 | | Atterdag: So am I and want to add: Ah, real chess again! |
|
Apr-27-25
 | | flimflam48: Hmm...does this really do justice to chess at this rapid rate? Surely it's merely reaction stuff? Hardly any time to think, plan or devise a lasting strategy? Seems that otherwise very good players are simply falling foul...of TIME?? Not impressed at all! |
|
Apr-27-25
 | | Check It Out: Nice to see Topalov back in action! |
|
Apr-27-25
 | | keithbc: 25 mins plus 10 secs per game is not 'reaction stuff'. You are thinking of blitz or even bullet - that is more appropriate but 25+10 is quite some time to formulate some plans and strategies. |
|
Apr-27-25
 | | Atterdag: I am with keithbc on this. We have seen many rapids with 15 minutes, so this is actually what I recall as normal sufficient rapid time from my playing days. |
|
Apr-28-25
 | | Check It Out: Agreed, 25+10 is serious chess at this level. Hard to tell these days when a comment is also serious or merely trolling. |
|
Apr-28-25
 | | tamar: It is entertaining, but not serious. Having to play three rounds per day further dilutes the quality of play, but in return we get more decisive results. You don’t get clashes like Carlsen vs P Maghsoodloo, 2025, but those are rare in any format. |
|
May-02-25
 | | PawnSac: This event does merit some interest..
The presence of players of the older guard; Aronian, MVL, Topalov, is a convenient measuring stick for the progress of the younger generation. |
|
May-02-25
 | | Atterdag: Great, <PawnSac>, that you write oldER and youngER, says this 77 y.o. being thinks 34 (MVL) isn't exactly old :-) Otherwise I agree with your point. <tamar> - at which time format do you regard the chess as being "serious"? Let's assume you're talking about classical chess, should we not take into consideration that the quality of the chess would be highly dependent on the time management skills of the player? I ask rethorically. In the beginning you may have an abundance of time at your disposal, but if you waste it on insignificant positions you may end up with less time than in a 25 min rapid. I don't think you can easily make the equation that more time = more quality. |

 | | PawnSac: < Atterdag: Great, <PawnSac>, that you write oldER and youngER, says this 77 y.o. being thinks 34 (MVL) isn't exactly old :-) Otherwise I agree with your point. > I'm 70, so I feel your sentiment. |
|
May-03-25
 | | PawnSac: Topalov has been on the slow and gradual decline. His peak was 2816 in July-sept 2015 and is currently at 2717. Considering he was FWCC in 2005, and this is twenty years later, and in spite of his age (@50 yrs) he is still #27 and a formidable contender. |

 | | Atterdag: In two days, i.e. 7 May, the Superbet Chess Classics commences in Bucharest. Gukesh, Caruana, Firouzja, Abdusattorov, Aronian, Praggnanandhaa, Vachier-Lagrave, Duda, So, Deac. No Carlsen, alas, but somewhat expected. Preview here: https://en.chessbase.com/post/super... |
