 | | offramp: Fujairah is on the Gulf of Oman, a city and resort, with its cloud-capped towers, gorgeous palaces and solemn temples. I believe that non-Muslims can buy alcohol in the hotel bars, just like Hastings. There's a long list of players from all over the globe. I was really happy to see Vasyl Ivanchuk. That great chess nomad has now out-rank <himself>! YEAH! He has gone beyond the GM title. People never say <"Grandmaster Fischer"> or <"Grandmaster Karpov"> - some players have gone way, way beyond that. |

 | | offramp: Sam Shankland is here. He (ATM) has 2½/4. He appears in today's <Game of the Day>: Caruana vs Shankland, 2025. The game was played in St Louis MO on 12th August 2025, i.e. 16 days ago. Did he use an aeroplane to get to Fujairah Global Superstars (2025) ? |

 | | Freelance Assassin: I'd go to this tournament if I was Ivanchuk, too, just to get away from those damn air raid sirens that keep going off. |

 | | offramp: I am thinking to myself about modern chess professionals' life. ( I mentioned this point earlier, Fujairah Global Superstars (2025) (kibitz #2) ). Sam Shankland played in Saint Louis Blitz (2025). In Round 18 he played Shankland vs Aronian, 2025 on 15th August. His next game was Shankland vs S L Narayanan, 2025, on August 25th, in Fujairah Global Superstars (2025). There must have been one whole day travelling: security, customs, passports, check-ins, changing at London, then gyrocopter, Dubai to Fujairah. One whole day to accustom to the time-zone.
One whole day to
1) figger out how the shower works
2) why is there only one reasonable channel on TV?
3) is there <anything> to eat <anywhere>?? One day to play through the 1,200 GM games played in the last week. Then he is ready for Round 1.
That's the life of a professional GM. |
