Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Mar del Plata (1982)

Also known as the IV Torneo Magistral Internacional de Ajedrez Clarín, this was the fourth tournament organized and sponsored by the newspaper Clarín. The opening ceremony took place roughly half an hour before Round 1 started. On behalf of Clarín, the Sports Minister Juan De Biase spoke, praising the presence of each of the players, especially World Champion Anatoly Karpov. The tournament director Carlos Enrique Guimard invited the players to take their seats, one by one, and the first to be mentioned was Karpov, whom the public offered enthusiastic applause. Once the players were seated, mayor Luis Nuncio Fabrizio spoke for the General Pueyrredón* municipality, thanking and praising the efforts of Clarín. Guimard explained to the public the significance of the first move, and at 1 pm, mayor Fabrizio performed Karpov's move 1.e4.

Five of the world top ten players participated. In addition to Karpov (#1) and Polugaevsky (#10) from Soviet Union, they were Portisch (#4) from Hungary, Timman (#5) from Holland, and Andersson (#9) from Sweden. The Dane Bent Larsen (#16) had won the second (1979) and third (1980) Clarin tournaments, but his overall career was on the decline, whereas the young US champion Seirawan (#29) was on the rise. Andersson had won the first Buenos Aires (Clarin) (1978), and was again undefeated (1 win 12 draws).

The 30-year-old clear winner Timman was also on the rise, and made one of his best tournaments. The 71-year-old Argentine legend Najdorf once again proved hard to beat. Panno wrote detailed reports in Clarín. Braga and Garcia made GM norms, and the pan-American champion Franco from Paraguay made an IM norm.

Jun-06-15  Everett: Rough tournament for champion-years Karpov.
Jan-02-17  ozmikey: <Everett> I recall seeing Larsen say in an interview once that "Karpov just couldn't play in Argentina." Something to do with him going through his separation from his first wife during a tournament in Argentina (might well have been this one, actually).

tamar: Karpov had another poor tournament in 1980 which Larsen won, Buenos Aires (Clarin) (1980)
