The event consisted of five matches where the champions first played 12 Rapid games in three days, then 24 Blitz games in two days. The Rapid games were awarded with 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss, and the Blitz games with 1 point for a win, ½ point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. The player with the best combined Rapid and Blitz score at the end of the event would win his match. Time control Rapid: 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment per move, starting from move 1.
