Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
GCT Bucharest Rapid & Blitz (2019)

The Superbet Rapid & Blitz took place in the Stejarii Country Club in Bucharest, Romania from 6-10 November. It was the 6th stage of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour, a series of eight events in which the world's best players competed for a total prize fund of $1.75 million. Seven of the 12 tour regulars, Caruana, Giri, Mamedyarov, Anand, Aronian, Karjakin and So, were joined by event wild cards Artemiev, Le Quang Liem and Korobov. The Rapid section was a 10-player single round-robin, and featured three rounds each day on the first three days, with a time control of 25 minutes for all moves and a 10-second delay from move 1. The final two days were a Blitz double round-robin, with 18 rounds of 5 minutes + 3-second delay. Rapid games counted double, with 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. A two-player tie for first place would be resolved by a 2-game rapid mini-match (10 + 5) and if necessary an Armageddon game (5 vs 4). Tournament director: Graham Jurgensen. Chief arbiter: Dinu-Ioan Nicula.

Aronian and Karjakin ended on 20/36 and earned 11 Grand Chess Tour points (GP):

HeMateMe: ever play 'Shot a Minute' with beer? you pour beer into shot glasses and have to knock over a shot every minute. Harder than you might think.
Nov-09-19  boz: Mamedysrov-Korobov
I can't believe Korobov got away with that.
Nov-10-19  mike1: well.... two " wild cards" are leading this event. No matter what happens in the last rounds, well picked!

MissScarlett: Artemiev went on a roll downhill yesterday (=6 -3) in the blitz.

halito27: Woo hoo! Le Quang Liem! I live in Vietnam and he's a national hero here; everyone knows him. So good for chess!

MissScarlett: Artemiev rebounded today (+5 =4).

chancho: Artemiev is not ready for prime time, yet.

But Le Quang Liem looks to be ready to play amongst the elite.

No doubt about it.

Seeing him competing with the likes of So, Ding, and Yangi seems most apropos to me.

Nov-10-19  jerry crus: <Tsamba's luster is that of a fool's gold.

Only bopols think it can last a long time> Hey Filipino Crab, he almost got the blitz section today if not for last game lost. He beat caruana twice in blitz.

Nov-10-19  torrefan: Carlsen is the highest rated in almost all categories and places high (if not winning them) in all tournaments he plays in. And he is world champion. That's talent.

Wesley So is not the highest rated in any category, he is not even in the top ten of standard chess. In many tournaments he even lands in the bottom. And he is "world champion". That's tsamba.

Nov-10-19  Carrots and Pizza: Caruana and So got spanked in this tournament. Must be very humbling for these elite players. So has really fallen in the last year or thereabouts. He was #2 in the world on the live rating list a few years ago, if I'm not mistaken and looked quite promising. Some were wondering if he would be a WCC challenger.

He's still young, so there is still time, but, I doubt he's ever going to the top now.

HeMateMe: can chessplayers drink? I would guess most are lightweights.

However, Mikhail Tal would be the exception!

perfidious: <HMM>, I can vouch for that.
Nov-10-19  parmetd: I don't think So has ever been #2 has he?

perfidious: <parmetd>, believe he got to live number two very briefly, but that spot has been something of a revolving door for any and all putative challengers these last few years.
Nov-10-19  torrefan: Carlsen is the god of chess. So those who reach no.2 can boast of being the world chess champ of humans
Nov-11-19  torrefan: 4th place again...

perfidious: Yeah, just ask the biographer...new math, don't you know.
Nov-11-19  dwavechess: 6 Players didn´t reach Number 1 because of Carlsen:Caruana, Aronian, Vachier Lagrave, Nakamura, So and Mamedyarov and In My Count I add Karjakin(only#4) but reach WCC final
Nov-11-19  DirkMcCallahan: The homepage says that "finishing in the top 2 overall...will secure a berth in the 2020 Candidates Tournament." Surely that's wrong?!

  Tabanus: Yes, that's wrong.

<Wesley Barbasa So (born October 9, 1993) is a Filipino-American chess grandmaster and current World Fischer Random Chess Champion. He is a three-time Filipino Chess Champion and was U.S. Chess Champion in 2017. On the March 2017 FIDE rating list, he was ranked number two in the world and had an Elo rating of 2822, making him the fifth-highest rated player in history.> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wesle...

Nov-20-19  Pedro Fernandez: Hi <AylerKupp>, I still don't understand why Giri is already classified by rating, sorry. Currently Giri is 2776 while MVL is 2777, and yet has to take the rating into account until January. Which is the reason? Thanks and regards
