Dec-31-21 | | tessathedog: I was curious after seeing video footage on chess24 of Petrosian’s final round game (drawn) in the world blitz. The game had ended. The camera had been focused on something else, but picked up Petrosian’s reaction at the end of the game. He looked…broken. He sat at the board with his two hands covering his eyes, head bowed, for at least 30 seconds, prompting Jan Gustaffson to ask “what’s happened to Tigran…is he crying?”. A reference was made to the large prizes on offer. I think we all assumed he had lost. Playing over the game just now (a great struggle) Petrosian doesn’t seem to blunder or anything…indeed, he seems to do well to save a complex ending a pawn down. So I guess his reaction was just a mixture of relief, exhaustion, and a reflection of the enormous pressure and tension of the game and day. It seemed a very human moment. |

 | | dernier loup de T: <fisayo123> I had in mind your list of FAVORITE games (part II), but I recognize you collected only 7 games in this list, so it really could very well be a coïncidence that there is no Carlsen game inside; just see my kibitzing as a little teasing, and please consider too I'm a fan of Magnus; so: just sorry, because of course I will never deny it's fully your right to prefer Firouzja's style! I'm a frenchman, but nationalism was always out of question for me, specially in chess but in general also. By the way: strange pace of play for "rapid" games in a World Championship; it seems to be more like almost blitz games already: only 15 minutes for each player!! maybe 25 to even 30 minutes per player would allow a better quality of the games, but after all, I'm not at all a specialist of these matters, and the organizers have to considers other factors too.
The "worst: I always had the feeling that in competitions of rapid games, double robin would be more fair also...
But of course, all that stuff would be topic for another debate... |

 | | PawnSac: < MissScarlett: Dubov let down Russia again. > I don't understand.. how so? He finished 11 way tie for 3rd only 1.5 pts below the champion. In a field of some 250? players only 5 outperformed him in this event. |

 | | MissScarlett: There are only 19 Dubov games, instead of 21. The Nakamura forfeit accounts for one - was there another? |
|
Jan-03-22 | | TheBirdman33: <MissScarlet> The Nakamura forfeit was already accounted for in the <21> total of games played, meaning the difference of two must have another reason, perhaps an upload bug, I don't know. |
|
Jan-03-22
 | | MissScarlett: But there are only 19 games totalling 13.5 points: World Blitz (2021)/Daniil Dubov whereas he scored 14.5/21. I have discovered that Dubov himself forefited his first round game with Piorun, but I don't know why. |
|
Jan-03-22 | | TheBirdman33: <whereas he scored 14.5/21.>So he <did> play 21 games, D Dubov that is, there is your answer, it's just that only 19 of 21 played by DD made it to the CG database. Which two are missing? <11> games were played on Day One, and 10 on Day Two, because of the Naka forfeit. |
|
Jan-03-22
 | | MissScarlett: The forfeit with Nakamura actually required him to make a move on the board, 1.e4, I believe, so the game may be said to have been played. I’m not sure if this formality was required because the draw for the round had already been made. |
|
Jan-04-22 | | TheBirdman33: That is another topic, you posted:
<MissScarlett: There are only 19 Dubov games, instead of 21. The Nakamura forfeit accounts for one - was there another?> The Naka forfeit did not count for one, as I explained. Perhaps you could address the person you react to specifically, me in this case, and copypaste what I say, if that is what you are reacting to. Less confusion, more clarity/logic. Which is why most of us are here. |

 | | Sally Simpson: Hi Miss S and Burdman
The Round One game Dubov v Piorun is missing. It has no recorded moves. There are a few other games (not Nakamura games) with no moves. Possibly issues with the electronic board. |
|
Jan-04-22
 | | Sally Simpson: Sorry Birdman. |
|
Jan-04-22
 | | Sally Simpson: A couple of other games where we know the result but no moves recorded. Round 12 Nihal - Vidit draw - no moves.
Round 13 Dudin - Halkias 0-1 no moves
chess results record this as '- - +' not 1-0, or 0-1, ½-½ which is the reverse of what they give for Dubov v Nakamura + - - so it some kind of default. https://chess-results.com/tnr600854... |

 | | MissScarlett: <The Naka forfeit did not count for one, as I explained.> It did. |
|
Jan-04-22 | | TheBirdman33: <Miss Sampson> Thanks - https://chess-results.com/tnr600854... I assume Dubov played 21 games/rounds, like all the other players, but the game vs Piorun turns out no result here, but I assume it was played. The Naka game was not played, which means that either one game is missing from the chess-results server, or Dubov for some reason played 20 games if you only erase the "Naka game" from the above list. If Dubov DID play 21 games in Warsaw, then one pairing is missing.
The Fide website is the final resource available, so sleep and be well, tomorrow is another day... Isn't that a Billy Joel song? zzzzzzz |

Jan-04-22 | | TheBirdman33: Master Joel - Tomorrow <is> Today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCi... |
|
Jan-04-22 | | TheBirdman33: Got it - the Dubov-Naka game was not played, but counted as a forfeit, it being the first pairing of the second day of Blitz - hence the 14.5 points for Dubov. |

Miss Sampson is spot on. I was good once, now I've lost my hair (due to nature, not Delilah) I'm weak. :) |
