 | | MissScarlett: I suspect it's the sponsor's name, but what does <ALREH> stand for? |
Aug-16-25
 | | jnpope: https://alreh.pl/en/about-us ? |
Aug-16-25 | | greed and death: The official site references the company <jnpope> linked as being the primary sponsor, but they appear to consistently use the stylization <Alreh> on their own website and I'm not entirely sure why its being used in all-caps form for chess purposes. In any case, they are medical equipment manufacturers based in Łódź who primarily focus on mobility aides for the disabled (amputees, paralysis, etc.) |
Aug-16-25
 | | MissScarlett: Should we change it to <Memorial>? |
Aug-16-25
 | | jnpope: <61st Akiba Rubinstein Chess Festival> is given as the event name in English on the website. Why not use the name they use? |
Aug-17-25
 | | MissScarlett: Last year it was Rubinstein Memorial (2024). |
Aug-17-25
 | | jnpope: Checking...
https://web.archive.org/web/2025011... Last year it was the <60th Akiba Rubinstein Chess Festival> based on the translation of the Polish in the header graphic. *shrug* |
Aug-17-25
 | | jnpope: I don't care what it's called, just so long as we remain consistent between years. |
Aug-19-25
 | | offramp: Akiba Rubinstein died on March 15th, 1961. This is the 61st Akiba Rubinstein Chess Festival (2025), according to the infallible User: jnpope ( see Rubinstein Memorial (2025) (kibitz #8) ). I can't imagine anyone organising a <1st Memorial Rubinstein> in 1962, but perhaps 1963. So 1963 + 61[Memorials] = 2024, but there could have been a COVID year off. |

 | | jnpope: infallible?
I'm wrong far more than I like! |
Aug-19-25
 | | MissScarlett: You're only infallible for the period after 1870. |
Aug-19-25
 | | jnpope: The first Memorial was held in August 1963.
They have the cross tables for the 1st through 20th tournaments:

Aug-19-25
 | | jnpope: The 48th, 49th, and 50th were in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively, so the skip was apparently prior to Covid. |
Aug-19-25
 | | jnpope: 2004 was the skipped year:

Aug-19-25
 | | jnpope: <MissScarlett: You're only infallible for the period after 1870.> Stop that, people will believe you. |
Aug-20-25 | | stone free or die: <<jn> Stop that, people will believe you> Don't worry, we know better!
Just wondering if we have any idea why 2004 was skipped? |
Aug-20-25
 | | Retireborn: <stone free> Likely they couldn't find a sponsor that year. If you look at the wikipedia page, for quite a few years there was no GM tournament and they had an open instead. When will the 4th round games appear? |

Aug-20-25 | | stone free or die: Thanks <Retireborn> - sounds reasonable. Still wonder why that one year though. |
Aug-20-25
 | | MissScarlett: That feeling when you check the broadcast after a couple of hours' play, and every game is dead level. 'I'll come back in an hour or two!" |

Aug-21-25 | | greed and death: Michael Adams is old enough to be the father (or grandfather!) of several of the other players here (he isn't, of course, or his name would be Michał Adamski) and I'm wondering if age is beginning to show. He had a successful run at the British Championship but a quick turn-around to come here and he's -3 after 5 rounds. Of course he'll probably run the table the rest of the way now that I've posted this... |

Aug-23-25 | | Albertan: A report about round 7 is at:

Aug-23-25 | | keithbc: re Mickey Adams; my thinking is the last British Championship may well be his last hurrah. The last few years have not been at all successful for him but it's to be expected; he'd been at the top for so long. All good things etc etc. |
