Herceg Novi blitz (1970) |
On 8 April 1970, following the USSR vs. Rest of the World 'Match of the Century' hosted in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, a blitz tournament was held in Herceg Novi, featuring many of the same participants from that event, including four world champions. The tournament was a 12-player double round-robin, with no tiebreaks and five minutes per player; former world champion Tigran Petrosian was regarded as the favorite, having long had a reputation as the world's best blitz player. However, Robert James Fischer put an end to this belief when he ran away with the tournament with a stunning 19-3 score, 4.5 points ahead of second place Mikhail Tal. Although the total scores of all players, and between each of the players, are known, no complete crosstable of the tournament exists. A table with all known information can be found at https://www.chesshistory.com/winter... . Final standings:
