HeMateMe: Why did Topey lose all of his games? Fatigue from the last tournament, which he played so well? Not a good omen...
May-07-13  badest: <HeMateMe> He probably doesn't mind having 5 blacks, and moreover he's a terrible blitz player.

Let's wait for the classical games to determine his form.

May-07-13  boz: Topalov has never been a blitz player but what happened to Aronian?
May-07-13  schweigzwang: There still seems to be a discrepancy between the results above, and those listed at the Norway Chess site, which lists the Blitz Round 9 result in Wang v. Karjakin as win for Karjakin (table above: Game 14, shown 1/2-1/2). The final position does seem to be advantageous for black.
May-07-13  voyager39: What I have never understood is how winning these inaugral blitz matches improve your draw and the final outcome? Or is it just a gimmick coz you eventually end up playing the same folks with both colours. Correct me if I am wrong.

Bigger question is whether FIDE is counting all these funny openers into its Blitz ratings?

And I'd also recommend that Chessgames creates a separate category for these casual encounters coz otherwise they drastically skew the "one on one" performance. I mean Aronian losing to Anand here counts for very little, but it goes to the scores here on CG and gives the impression as if Anand is catching up.

May-07-13  waustad: <voyager39>They do itemize as best they can for the won loss, by giving rapid/blitz/exhibition games separately from classical.
May-07-13  schweigzwang: Ok they seem to agree now, thanks!

keypusher: <hellopolgar: I am sure any of these 2700+ players will have no problem beating Jon Ludvig Hammer even with black. So an extra black against Jon Ludvig Hammer wouldn't really be all that bad.>

Hammer is rated 2608. Someone rated 100 points above him would be expected to score ~64% overall, ignoring color. Someone rated 200 points above him would be expected to score ~75% overall, ignoring color. So, I don't agree that any 2700+ player <will have no problem beating [him] even with Black>.

A lot of people seem to think that a 100 point rating advantage means you're expected to win almost every game. Not so.

May-07-13  LucB: <gromguten: Kramnik>

Am I the only one who thought that was funny, given who had asked the question?..

May-07-13  boz: No, I'm still laughing about it, Luc.
May-07-13  Just Another Master: The Topa program is not created for blitz apparently.
May-08-13  Rolfo: < Or is it just a gimmick coz you eventually end up playing the same folks with both colours. Correct me if I am wrong.>

In a SRR (single round robin) you play each opponent only once

May-08-13  anandrulez: Grand prix winner at 1 and only 2 draws and 7 losses I mean I really thought good players will be fast too but Topa is an exception he is more of the hard working guy who don't know to push pieces fast

Or, to put it even more picturesque: if we assume the higher rated player to be unbeatable, 72% of the games will end in a draw.

May-08-13  Zenagg: I imagine to avoid psyching himself out by trying 100% and losing, Topa took another approach which is, play and win or play and lose. I imagine trying 100% and getting crushed is worse then playing decently and losing.

I am not a big Topa fan but against this prodigious field, I wouldn't waste energy on a sprint right before the boston marathon.

May-08-13  SirRuthless: <anandrulez> Not enough time for danailov to work his evil is why topolov played bad. Or he was tanking games due to good results with black in the grand prix.
May-08-13  pbercker: I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet, especially Anand's fans, but the final result of the blitz tournament is a bit of a (albeit small) milestone unto itself for Anand, and is worth noticing with respect to what it says about Anand's chess strength. Blitz of course favors the young, and indeed the final result generally reflects that as those at the top are younger (in their 20s) than those at the bottom (in their 30s and 40s), except for one glaring exception, namely Anand who, as the oldest, 44, should have been near the bottom!

That he tied for second place with Carlsen suggest that it's much too soon to predict his demise at the upcoming WCC as some people (like me) are wont to do, and that he is a force to reckon with.

And lest I make too much of this, it's well to remember what a famous Russian chess player once said:

"He who analyses blitz is stupid." – Rashid Nezhmetdinov

or not enough time to check the toilet

May-08-13  Sularus: nice one, lightning kid!
May-08-13  NGambit: <pbercker> Vishy being a rapid/blitz virtuoso is no news. Look no further than Botvinnik Memorial Rapid (2011) for what he's capable of in faster time controls.

BTW, that success did not carry forward, to put it mildly, to the next three classical tournaments he played.

That he *continues* to be rapid/blitz virtuoso at the age of 44, competing against 20 something players, is, to me, somewhat news worthy if only in view of the biological realities of the aging brain, which of course has outliers, and he may be one of them (Lasker is the clearest example of this).

To my way of thinking, this merely reinforces that Anand is not just a very strong GM, but a World Champion of exceptional abilities.

(I also emphasize the point because, being a fan of Carlsen, I tend to underplay Anand's accomplishment, and this is by way of needed corrective, since I'm probably not the only one!)

I still think that Carlsen will ultimately win the WCC, but it will be no cakewalk.

lol i didnt read the comments before i posted

May-10-13  fisayo123: Its funny how the commentators completely ignored Radjabov's games in the first 5 rounds. Strange AND intentional.
