Hoogovens 1972
Compiled by Tabanus
--*--

Whilst FIDE president Max Euwe was in Moscow to negotiate conditions for the Spassky - Fischer World Championship Match (1972), the 34th Hoogovens tournament started in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, in early January. Most of the players had played in tournaments a month or so before: Portisch, Pomar, Ljubojevic and Benkö in Palma de Mallorca (1971), Smyslov, Hort and Savon in Moscow (1971), while Browne and Timman came straight from Stockholm Open 1971/72 (1971). None could come of course from Hastings (1971/72), which had not finished yet. At a very late stage it was clear that the invited Mikhail Tal was sick and could not come. After the drawing of lots on 10 January, however, a phone call from Antonio Angel Medina Garcia, who would be playing in the B-group, made everybody happy. He was able to say that Pomar was willing to step in, but that he could only arrive in the country about half an hour before the start of play. Play started the next day at 1 pm.1 Pomar (his game was perhaps deferred to later that afternoon) won his game and overall performed above par. The competition was quite even, but the one to disappoint was Ljubojevic. Portisch had no losses and was unstoppable. Category: 11 (GM norm 9, IM norm 6,5). Top prizes: 4000, 3000 and 2500 Dutch guilders.2
