Jan-19-03 | | Sarimanok: ++ Better would have been 12...Kb8. |
Aug-06-03 | | AussiePatzer: White could win the exchange after 12. h5 Nge7 13. Ng5 Re8 14. Nf7 Rg8 15. Nd6+ Kb8 16. Nxe8 Bxe8. Nimzo notes however, that after these moves white, "with his undeveloped Queenside and his unprotected pawn on h5, would have had some difficulties to contend with. The text move (b4) is the logical continuation." Indeed b4 seems consistent with the cramping effect of the central pawn setup. |
Sep-07-03 | | Marnoff Mirlony: The position of Blacks Queen in the end is laughable. |
Jan-25-04 | | Catfriend: Amasing, but I must agree with you, Mirlony! That's a real positional classic! As <Ben Lau> said, this can be considered a queen-trap! |
Feb-03-04 | | Catfriend: 13.h5! starts an a major poisitonal pressure, but 14.♗d2? allows 14..♘g8! or ♗e8! witxh counterplay, which black doesn't exploit. 16..f4? just activates more white's queen.
Of course, 18..♖e8? is a resignation. d:c3 would still keep black in the pitching. 24..♗e7? lets Nimzo conclude with nice tactics. |
Feb-22-05 | | aw1988: The first "Nimzowitsch Gambit" according to this database, and what a humerous game it is. Qa8!! :) |
Apr-01-05 | | Backward Development: What a game! |
Apr-01-05 | | Marvol: 4. Qg4!!
Prepares the magnificent Queen sac against an unsuspecting Black thirteen moves later. From here, White is winning, the rest is a matter of technique.LOL loved that April 1st game :) |
Apr-02-05 | | catlover: <Catfriend> Thanks for your observations of where black missed some counterplay or drifted along with what Nimzo was trying to do. Of course, it is still a classic game by Nimzovitch. Seeing the black queen trapped in the corner from move 22 on is worth the price of admission. |
May-11-05 | | schnarre: Gotta love the classics! |
May-11-05 | | Shams: Only nimzo would play white and sac a pawn, right out of the gate, to establish a blockade. a nice win for him, but still...not the sexiest idea in the world. |
Jun-03-05 | | schnarre: <Shams> Perhaps not, but still quite effective here! |
Jul-26-05 | | vraja: can anyone pls explain what blockade means ? (Also about overprotection) |
Jul-26-05
 | | ray keene: blockade= restricting the opponents space and possibilities usually by establishing strong squares for your own pieces , creating a net or chain with your pawns and trying to hem in the opponents pieces behind the enemy pawns. overprotection+bringing your forces into harmonious contact with a strategically important point or square. both theories were adumbrated by nimzowitsch but of course he didnt have a monopoly on playing them. here are some great blockade games
nimzowitsch-tartakower carlsbad 1929
samisch-nimzowitsch copenhagen 1923
nimzowitsch -capablanca new york 1927 caro kann
alekhine -nimzowitsch san remo 1930
petrosian -fischer cands tournament 1959
here are some instructive overprotection games
nimzowitsch v salwe carlsbad 1911 i
think --a french defence
nimzowitsch-wolf carlsbad 1923
petrosian-botvinnik game 5 1963 -e4 square
petrosian -botvinnik 7 1963--d5 square
hope that helps |

Aug-04-05 | | kevin86: Black's queen is as snug as a bug in a rug---no place for a regal queen to be in!! |
Sep-25-05 | | Averageguy: Nice combination by Nomzo at the end. |
Sep-26-05 | | PaulLovric: a favorite |
Sep-26-05 | | Landman: I'm sensing a "trapped pieces" Game-of-the-day theme here. =) |
Sep-26-05 | | khense: "Women's Prison" - Good title for this game - both queens were kind of in prison. However Hakansson couldn't even sacrifice his queen. |
Sep-26-05
 | | al wazir: Can black defend with 23...Nec6? His position is terribly cramped, but I don't know how white would have continued. |
Sep-26-05 | | posoo: Average Guy, I like the name "Nomzo." It made me smile. |
Sep-26-05 | | EmperorAtahualpa: A nice pun for a game which I'm sure is known to most of us already anyways. But what a lovely game it is! |
Sep-26-05 | | Saruman: This game is also featured in Win at Chess. |
Sep-26-05
 | | keypusher: <cg.com>, nice of you to have this as the game of the day right after Benjamin-Carter; it's like a tatics primer followed by a strategy primer. I can only look at the first 8 moves on ChessTutor; is anyone else having this problem? |
Sep-26-05 | | kevin86: I just played this one a few days ago,in reaction to the game on the imprisoned knight. A classic in every form of the word. Note:this is also a classic Nimzo game, due to the overprotection theme. |
