 | | Fusilli: Of course I might be wrong, but I think Black has the better chances here. The bishop might relocate to the long diagonal. Black has threats in the making. White is tied up. |
Dec-04-12 | | haydn20: 32. g4 wins on the spot. |

Dec-04-12 | | Cemoblanca: <scormus: <Cemoblanca: <scormus: .... You should send him a good line! :D> If I could find one, I would. How about " Don't close doors, keep an escape clause because we might lose the Big Apple"> Ahahahaha!!! |

Dec-04-12 | | Sokrates: And now: Qf2 ta-da-da! |
Dec-04-12 | | Marmot PFL: Was 33 Ne1 good? I was thinking 33 cd cd 34 Re6 and maybe Qb6 was winning. |

Dec-04-12 | | Cemoblanca: Man, I'm hungry! It's time for a "Gawain's Queen Toast"... |

 | | plang: Very clever defense - Carlsen gives back the queen to be up the exchange |

Dec-04-12
 | | plang: Jones turns it down realizing it was lost |

 | | chessgames.com: Thanks to everybody for watching today's live broadcast. Please note that <tomorrow is a rest day> -- the action continues on Thursday at 9:00am USA/Eastern (14:00 London). Hope to see you then! |
Dec-04-12 | | Marmot PFL: White give back exchange and win easily. Black will be helpless without DSB. |
Dec-04-12 | | Wyatt Gwyon: I was actually hoping to see Carlsen grind out another nice endgame. |
Dec-04-12
 | | chessgames.com: Stay tuned and we'll check out one of the other boards. |
Dec-04-12 | | Cemoblanca: C'mon guys handshake after 37.Rxc3. ;) |
Dec-04-12
 | | Fusilli: I blame ...Rc3 and ...dxc5. Jones didn't realize he didn't have time for that intermediate move. I thought his position was active and the material compensated, at least until ...Rc3. I am sure the computer will mercilessly refute my assessment, though. But in the end the fallible calculations of grandmasters are more relevant than the brutal calculating power of computers. |
Dec-04-12 | | Sokrates: I say kudos to Gawain Jones for going down with great honor and grace. He presented some great ideas and bold counterplay for Magnus in this game. A true classic chess-player in the good old style - which is why we all love chess. Thanks to both players, and of course Carlsen/Lasker has to be praised for cold-headed defense. |

Dec-04-12
 | | scormus: <CG> thanks, and thanks to the players for an entertaining battle. I canot help thinking it was my fault Gawain lost. He played 18 ... Qxa3 while I was eating when I should have been watching his back. |
Dec-04-12 | | Cemoblanca: That was very entertaining stuff. Thanks to Dr. Jones! ;) Thanks for broadcasting CG! :) Now, I'll try to sacrifice my Queen (whenever possible)! :D |
Dec-04-12 | | Cemoblanca: <scormus: <CG> thanks, and thanks to the players for an entertaining battle. I canot help thinking it was my fault Gawain lost. He played 18 ... Qxa3 while I was eating when I should have been watching his back.> Yes, but you know <scormus>, on the other hand, we had a lot of fun today! I'm outta now! Cheers! :) |
Dec-04-12 | | Ulhumbrus: Had the queen sacrifice succeeded, it would have invited comparison with the famous game La Bourdonnais vs McDonnell, 1834
If the queen sacrifice does not work, an alternative is the move 18...Rf6! pointed out by <haydn20> . This threatens 19...Re6 and it may lead to a win for Black. |
Dec-04-12 | | notyetagm: <plang: I guess Dragon players are trained to play stuff like that.
He did make some positional gains with the sacrifice - I don't know if it is enough.> You mean Dragon players are trained to play unsound sacrifices? |
Dec-04-12
 | | scormus: <notyetagm: .... You mean Dragon players are trained to play unsound sacrifices?> Yes, like ... Rxc3. But more crucially, once they play them they must keep the gas pedal floored and not look back. If Gawain made a mistake, it was spending time analysing possible winning refutation by Magnus. So he was out of time when it got very wild and tactical. Like on move 27 when ... Nd3, while probably not winning would have enabled him to land a few more punches. |

Dec-04-12 | | Kanatahodets: Hurraa MC 2857.4. The best. Done. Time to retire... |
