Jul-25-20 | | V Geriakov: Completely crushing victory by Quinteros . Black would have done better to play 7...e6 . Instead he sat still and got busted on the kingside . |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Perhaps not exactly the most mild-mannered King hunt ever, but who would object to that? Quite a breath-taking return to the Romantic days. |

 | | Phony Benoni: The queen sacrifice on g6 is probably most associated with the game known as "The Chinese Immortal", Liu Wenzhe vs J H Donner, 1978, memorable as the first game in which a Chinese player defeated a Western grandmaster. There have been some examples since, and even a predecessor in "The Smollny Smush": Smollny vs Asafov, 1956. Quinteros's example is of a different type, leading to a long range kinghunt rather than a quick mating combination. |

 | | Retireborn: <Phony Benoni> Was it the *first* such game, though? As I recall someone (Speelman?) wrote that Donner twitted Sigurjonsson with "How could you lose to a Chinaman?" before doing so himself. |

Jul-25-20
 | | Retireborn: Quick look on Olimpbase shows the game was Sigurjonsson v Qi Jingxuan from the first round of Buenos Aires (not present here). In the second round Sigurjonsson had to play a Japanese(!) who assayed exactly the same variation of the French. He must have feared the worst, but did manage to win that game. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Retireborn> Your memory is better than mine! Now, I do vaguely remember that sequence of events. |
|
Jul-25-20 | | Brenin: The Q sac, followed by the K hunt, is spectacular, but the more cautious 20 Rh6 or Bh5 would have been just as effective. The subtlety of White's opening strategy, from moves 6 to 20, is impressive: push Ps, advance Q. It's nice that the KN eventually gets a chance to join in. |
|
Jul-25-20 | | morfishine: Thank you <Phony Benoni> & <CG>! Game quality should be the only factor in determining GOTD Half-wit game titles submitted by nit-wit comedian want-to-bees, splattered all across the top of sub-par, mediocre and/or boring games, should come in a distant last place as far as priority goes |

 | | MissScarlett: It's not even a pun. Reject. |

Jul-25-20 | | Ironmanth: Amazing onslaught of a mating attack; unparalleled! Thanks chessgames; everyone stay safe out there in our chess world this weekend. |

 | | AylerKupp: <MissScarlett> While a pun is a desirable GOTD's title, it's not a requirement. Otherwise the following which immediately come to mind would have been rejected as GOTD's, which may simply indicate that either Fischer is not very punny or the Byrne brothers got special dispensation from a GOTD's title needing to be a pun. D Byrne vs Fischer, 1956 Robert E Byrne vs Fischer, 1963 Hopefully you think that this game and those other two qualify as GOTDs. |

 | | MissScarlett: <While a pun is a desirable GOTD's title, it's not a requirement.> Didn't claim it was. See Quinteros vs L Fernandez Novas, 1995 (kibitz #3). |
|
Jul-25-20 | | RandomVisitor: As V Geriakov mentions earlier, e6 was called for on move 7, perhaps even on moves 8 or 9. After 7.d5

 | | MSteen: Terrific game! I tried to imagine being black, and all I could think of was being strangled. Quinteros never let up for a moment. Shades of the 19th century immortal tacticians. |
|
Jul-25-20 | | Nullifidian: A beautiful game and a brilliant finish.
However, I think that 30. ♖h5+ was just a tad bit more precise. If 30... ♔f4, then 31. ♔f2 followed by 32. ♘e2# whatever black plays. And if 30... ♔g6, then 31. ♖g5+ ♔h7 ▢ 32. ♕g8+ ♔h6 ▢ 33. ♕h8# But with a game like this, this is the merest quibble. |
