Feb-06-08  ganstaman: If I were to play 1...d5 against 1. e4 or 1. d4, I would meet 1. e4 d5 2. d4 with 2...e6! But I guess you have to be comfortable with the French first, and if we're talking about people trying to avoid theory, then comfort with the French wouldn't be likely.
Feb-07-08  Akavall: <MaxxLange> 4. b4 is interesting; it looks like after 4...Qxb4 5. Rb1, black can't easily develop their light-squared bishop, since b7 is attacekd; also, it doesn't look like black will castle long here :).

Btw, I play 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nf3, and I am planing d4, c4 and only then Nc3. I figure that I'll get my tempo on the c4.

  Troller: <Akavall: 2. d4 is a good try, but black certainly doesn't have to accept that gambit. This is why I find Scandinavian to be quite annoying; there are no gambits against it! > <Akavall: <MaxxLange> 4. b4 is interesting>

I recently won a game (serious time limits) with something like 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 3. Nf3 Qxd5 4. Nc3 Qa5 5. b4 Qxb4 6. a4 to follow up with Ba3. I think it should normally be played 1.e4 d5 2.ed5 Qd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.b4.

If Black does not venture into ..Qa5, it is not possible of course. Also, it is most definitely not very sound, but you get a lot of pressure, and in some lines Black should watch out for his queen.

My blitz experience tells me that ..Qxb4 is more effectively met by a4 than immediately Rb1. Since Black wants to castle short, it is very annoying for him with a White Ba3.

Feb-07-08  Akavall: <Troller>

I like the a4 idea; it seems very good from the practical stand point. Thanks for pointing it out.

Apr-04-08  Vollmer: I play the 2.Nf6 lines often because I enjoy the resulting positions . The 3.c4-c6 lines are especially fun . Yes , with precise play White can usually reach a pawn up endgame . But Black has open lines and active pieces which can lead to successful attacks . After 2.e5 we see an improved French (Black can activate the Queen's Bishop . And since I like ugly French Def. games this also suits me fine . I am not a great (or even above average) player and I find it easier to get White into lines and positions that I have more experience with than my opponent . I also avoid all those heavily analyzed lines after 1...e5 or 1...c5 . The 2...Qxd5 lines are much more complicated and I am studying them . Kasparov-Anand is a good example of the proper use of this opening . While Anand misplayed in the middlegame , all observers were surprised that Anand got a superior position against Kasparov with the Black pieces . So I guess the dismissive comment "Its a beginner's opening" is refuted . Like the King's Gambit it is a difficult opening to play and like the King's Gambit it has not been refuted . It isn't surprising at all that we do not see these 2 openings in GM play often . Even GM's with their fantastic memories and deep chess understanding prefer to play lines that they know well .
Apr-04-08  Vollmer: Obviously I meant 2...Nf6 in the opening line of my previous comment .
Apr-16-08  ongyj: The problem with the "improved" center-counter defence 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 is really 3.Bb5+!? This move is outright annoying -- In fact I abandoned the entire 2...Nf6 line because of this very white move. I wonder how the other 2...Nf6 advocates and specialists deal with this kind of problem? Thanks in advance for shedding some light on this matter ^Ô^
Apr-16-08  whiteshark: <ongyj> Can you show us a line of best moves until move 6 or 7 ? Is it 3...Ld7 4.Bc4 b5 5.Bb3 a5 6.a3 Bg4 7.f3 Bc8 8.Nc3 Ba6 ?
Apr-16-08  ongyj: <whiteshark> I'm very sorry not to consider the line you posted seriously. Instead I have <3...Bd7 4.Bc4 Bg4 5.f3> (Black Bishop runs away) and I find that White is able to keep the extra pawn without too much difficulty. Perhaps it's due to my lack of vision/depth. Anyway, I think for White players fighting for a win 3.Bb5+!? is the way to go against 2...Nf6 center counter players. Looking forward to learn more from you and other chessgames members =)
Apr-16-08  whiteshark: <<ongyj> <3...Bd7 4.Bc4 Bg4 5.f3>> Check this premium tool:

I think with the manouvre Nbd7-b6 black gets a tempo and his ♙ back, e.g.

Apr-16-08  ongyj: <whiteshark> Thanks alot. Now that does look like a good reason why I may reconsider 2...Nf6 again =)
Apr-18-08  ongyj: Also, I'd suggest another move other than those found in the chessgames opening database, <1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.Bb5+ Bd7 4.Bc4 Bg4 5.f3 Bc8 6.Nc3 Nbd7 7.d6 ...> Since the pawn will be inevitably regained by Black, let Black regain it at a more passive square! I prefer White despite the engine's analysis, which recommended a gambit with 7...e5!? But 2...Nf6 appears playable indeed.

May-18-08  WarmasterKron: A pretty little Icelandic miniature of mine that I'm quite pleased with:

Jun-11-08  Vollmer: onqyj , I was taught to trade Knight for Bishop as Black when the position is sure to open up on the diagonals ...but then again I prefer BB over NB anyway , White or Black . Maybe someday I'll learn how to play positionally with those cursed Knights . <chuckles>
Jun-14-08  ongyj: Dear practitioners of Center counter with 2...Nf6, I'm just wondering if the following line is playable

1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.Bb5+ Bd7 4.Bc4 Bg4 5.f3 Bc8 6.Nc3 Nbd7 7.Ne4 [If 7...Nb4 8.Nxf6+ exf6] White loses moves, but 'doubles' Black's pawns. Is this playable, and/or who stands better here?

Thanks for taking a look.

Aug-01-08  MR. NIMZO: hay guys i recently played a non popular Scandinavian line, i was playing white.

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qd6 4. d4 e5. and it ended in a draw.

analyzing after the game i saw that no matter what white plays on move 5 (Nf3 or dxe5...) i dont see any win for white

what i would have to guess is that move 4. d4 is a mistake.

so can somebody with a good chess engine (Fritz...) please look this line up, and what should be whites respond.

thanks

Aug-03-08  firefly3: It was unnecessary to post this in (at least) three forums :P More tactful would have been to post the question here, and should you not receive a response then notify people in Kibitzer's Cafe (since this is very active) that you have a question in this forum.

As for your question -- it's kind of silly to ask for a winning move on move 5, but as far as advantage goes, I think that after 5. dxe5 Qxe5+ 6. Be2, white may be able to exploit his advantage in development in the resulting open game, especially since Nf3 will come with tempo. White is certainly better off in the position.

  Phony Benoni: OK, ready for something new against the Scandinavian? Here's a game I recently won on GameKnot:

<1.e4 d5 2.Qf3!?>

Hey, every time I face the Scandinavian my opponent brings his queen out early and I get totally frustrated not being able to catch her while developing my pieces. Let's see how Black likes it!

<3...dxe4 3.Qxe4 Nf6 4.Qa4+ Bd7 5.Qb3 b6 6.Bc4 e6 7.d4 Nc6 8.Qe3 Be7 9.Nf3 0-0 10.Nc3 Nb4 11.Bb3 Nfd5 12.Nxd5 Nxd5 13.Qe2 Bd6 14.Bg5 f6 15.Bd2 Kh8 16.0-0-0 a5 17.c4 Nf4 18.Qe4 a4 19.Bc2 Ng6 20.h4 f5 21.Qe1>

"You've come a long way, Baby..."

<21...a3 22.b4 c5 23.dxc5 bxc5 24.b5 Qf6??>

Naturally, Black's first queen move is instantly fatal, allowing White to simultaneously seize the long diagonal and hit the loose bishop on d7.

<25.Bc3 Bf4+ 26.Kb1 Qf7 27.h5 e5 28.hxg6 Qxc4 29.Rxh7+> 1-0

As White has an embarrassing number of ways to win. So I recommend 2.Qf3 unreservedly, especially if I ever play the Scandinavian against you.

Jan-28-09  blacksburg: sometimes i think that the scandinavian's poor reputation is because the only people that play it are scrubs like me.

i mean, look at phony benoni's game, of course 2.Qf3 is garbage, but he wins anyway because the black player is not very good, and everyone that looks at it is like, "oooh scandinavian sux". but really, PB just played better than other dude, and would likely have won in any opening.

is it bad that all of the openings i play are garbage? i'm trying to learn 1.e4 e5, at least partly because of my scandinavian inferiority complex.

Jan-28-09  MaxxLange: !.e4 d5 2. Qf3!?

will at least wake them from their Scandanavian slumber

  An Englishman: Good Evening: The <Phony Benoni> Attack (why not!) is intriguing. 2...c6; 3.Nc3 transposes to a rare sideline of the Caro-Kann, but the move that might work best for Black is 2...d4!?, because White's Queen blocks both f2-f4 and Ng1-f3. But White can continue in original fashion with 3.Qb3!? intending 4.Bc4. So 3...Nc6; 4.Bc4,e6, threatening 5...Na5; 6.Qa4+,c6. But White has alternatives at move 4: 4.Bb5 and 4.f2-f4.

All very curious.

Jan-28-09  blacksburg: the <phony benoni> attack is like a "reversed scandinavian" in a way. instead of capturing on d5 and kicking black's queen around, white volunteers his queen to be kicked around on e4!
