TheAlchemist: Pity he never played H J Federer
Mar-27-06  Jim Bartle: Or R Hewitt, S Safin, or V Coria.
Mar-27-06  17.Bxg7: This is actually the list of chess players ordered according to the current entry rankings (Mar 27, 2006), taking only the tennis players in the Top 25 (otherwise we should include S. Safin, historic like P.A Connors or G. Borg or race drivers like Schumacher, among others). More than a half of them are also chess players (even there is one -Thomas Johansson- who kept his name for both sports)!!

1) H J Federer

3) Tigran Nalbandian

6) F Ljubicic

7) Valentin Fernandez Coria

9) Joseph Henry Blake

13) Thomas Johansson

14) R Hewitt

16) J Stepanek

17) Johannes Kiefer

19) Be Gonzalez

20) Grosjean

24) K Nieminen

25) Andreev

Mar-27-06  Jim Bartle: Hewitt (the tennis player) has dropped to 14? I thought he was about #4.
Mar-27-06  you vs yourself: I thought Hewitt was in the top 3. But apparently he was #13 seed in the Nasdaq open and he was defeated by the unseeded Henman, who was another perenial top 10 player. I like the tennis ranking system. You have a bad year, you're out of the top 10. Work your way back in, if you think you deserve a place among the current best.
Mar-27-06  Jim Bartle: Among the women, Kim Clijsters was about #3, got injured and dropped to #130 and whatever, entered tournaments unseeded, worked her way up, and won the US Open and reached #1, at least for a while.

Martina Hingis is doing something similar, having retired three years ago.

Nov-28-07  xeroxmachine: dont forget: Otto M Tennison
Mar-19-08  Jim Bartle: Watched a little as he crushed JC Ferrero today. When he's got it going he's one tough player, a challenge for anybody.
Mar-19-08  Augalv: oh no, I missed it!
Mar-19-08  Jim Bartle: He's still in the Palm Springs tourney, is playing very well.
Mar-19-08  Augalv: I'm definitely not going to miss Nalbandian's next game!
Mar-20-08  adair10: <Jim Bartle: Watched a little as he crushed JC Ferrero today>

I guess hat was a sweet revenge for a loss at Australian Open earlier this year.

Mar-20-08  Jim Bartle: BTW, tremendous match (6-7 7-6 7-5) yesterday as Nadal defeated Tsonga, getting some payback for Tsonga crushing him at Australian Open. Great play by both guys, though Tsonga folded a little after leading 5-2 in the last set; Nadal had a look saying, I am NOT going to lose this.
Mar-21-08  hitman84: I blame it on Tsonga's nerves. But I agree..Nadal has that 'never say die' attitude of Chang.
Mar-21-08  Jim Bartle: Nalbandian looks like a sure thing for the semis, where he'll probably meet Federer in the semis. Nadal-Djokovic on the other side, a big-time match.
Mar-21-08  Augalv: I'm looking foward to another Nalbandian- Federer face-off.
Mar-21-08  Jim Bartle: Well, if they can beat Fish and Haas repectively, you get your wish. Haas is playing well, though.
Mar-22-08  Augalv: Unfortunately I didn't get my wish.
Mar-22-08  Jim Bartle: Nope, swallowed by a Fish.
Apr-02-08  hitman84: Fish played some great Tennis!

<Augalv>What happened to 'El Mago' Guillermo Coria ?

Apr-02-08  Augalv: I'm glad you ask <hitman84:>, that means some people still remember him. He is still playing, -but only in Challengers- with still negative results. This year he has played five matches but won only one. I hope some day he comes back. I really miss his 'magic'.
Apr-03-08  hitman84: <Augalv>His backhand down the line is something more than magic. I hope he returns to competitive tennis soon.

Nov-24-08  Jim Bartle: Nalbandian is certainly an extremely talented player, but he'd be even better if he'd get rid of those extra five or ten pounds around his waist. No excuse not to be in top shape.

Concerning Coria, seems he just lost his serve a couple of years ago, began double-faulting like crazy, and lost his confidence. Too bad, because he was great to watch, one of the fastest players I've ever seen.

Something similar has happened to pitchers in baseball, losing their control from one day to the next (Rick Ankiel, Steve Blass) and golfers who just can't hit the ball straight (Ian Baker-Finch) or make three-foot putts (Tom Watson, for a while).
