Information on <Leonids Dreibergs> from <hemy> here: Vladimir Petrov (kibitz #929) Interesting article was published by Tenis Melngailis in "Brīvā Zeme", April 1, 1940, p. 11: "Jaunie Rīgas šacha meistari" - "New Riga chess champion". (In this case 'meistar' should be translated as a 'champion', not as a 'master').
"2 rounds before the end of the tournament is already known the name of the winner - 32 years old Leonids Dreibergs. Indeed impressive result. This time the winner was the strongest in spirit and body. Success of chess player depends on health, well-being. Rarely, another game requires a nervous effort, energy consumption like a chess. It should not be forgotten that none of the chess players has economic security, except, perhaps, Koblenc. Everyone is working, earns his daily bread.
These daily worries do not require less energy.

We met only once at the board, in the 1986 New England Open, by which time Strazdins was well past his peak, though still 2100. Believe I played 1.d4 f5 2.Bg5 as White and recall winning an ending. |

| Apr-25-19 | | hemy: Augsburg International chess tournament 1946 (September 25 - October 6) was was dedicated to 25th anniversary of Augsburg Chess Union that included six German societies plus Guest Associations - Latvian and Lithuanian Chess Clubs.
It was the 1st big international chess tournament in the American Military Occupation zone. During the tournament, the union released five numbers of the special "Augsburger Schachecho" newspaper. " ... Among Latvian players participated in the tournament was a 'man without nerves' - Dreibergs ... For Dreiberg's strengths - the Gentlemen considered having strong defense and the shining end game ..." The winner of the tournament Wolfgang Unzicker finished with 14/16, 2nd was Elmars Zemgalis 13/16, 3-4 place shared Povilas Tautvaisas (Lithuania) and Friedrich Sämisch 10.5/16.

| Apr-25-19 | | hemy: American Zone Displaced persons camps championship was held in Schleissheim, Germany, March 18-31, 1947. Bohatirchuk, Endzelins, Zemgailis and some other strong players didn't took part in this tournament that was held in Russian and Ukraine prisoners camp Schleissheim (near Munich), because the invitations were sent too late. Most of the chess players received the invitation few days before beginning of the tournament and some of the players didn't received them at all. Poor living conditions impacted the quality of games, but DP chess players impressed with fierce battles. Dreibergs shared 5-6 place with Kozma (7.5/12). Results:
1-3. Tautvaišas, Selezniov, Shindler 8.5/12
4. Ozols 8/12
5-6. Dreibergs, Kozma 7.5/12
7. Arlauskas 7/12
8. Jasinski 6/12
9-11. Stabinš, Sabronov, Stojanovski 4.5/12

Our chess players Endzelins and Zemgailis did not arrive, nor did the Ukrainian grand master Fedor Parfenovich Bohatirchuk. The first place was shared by the Lithuanian Tautvaišis, the Russian
Selezniov and Shindler, out of competition participant, with 8.5/12 everyone.
Latvian Ozols, Chech Kozma and Latvian
Dreibergs with 7.5 points shared 5-6 place. 7th - Lithuanian Arlauskas with 7 points. 8th - Russian Jasinski 6 points.
9-11 place shared Russians Stojanovski and Sapronov with Latvian Stabiņš - 4.5 points. 12 place took Latvian Pamiliens and Russian Spengler - 1.5 points. The championship will be decide by Tautvaišas - Selezniov match. Tautvaišas was on the 2nd place during most of the tournament, but in the last round he beat the Stabiņš and won the tournament.
After the well-played opening, Stabiņš did not find the right continuation, nor did it get the "remis" expected. 80 years old world renowned top composer Seleznev demonstrated his outstanding top-of-the-line endgame technique. Shindler was much helped by luck, although he can be proud of his achievements in past, sharing 1-2 place in Germany championship 1927. Ozols, like in grand tournament of Hanau, missed the fateful 1/2 point also this time. The most dramatic game was Kozma - Dreibergs. Dreibergs needed to win this game to share 1st place.
Kozma, however, defeated his opponent with an effective queen sacrifice. The lower than expected place was taken by Arlauskas. New talent among Russian emigrants is 21 years old Jasinski, who surprised his opponents with excellent knowledge of opening theory. A rapid game tournament was held as well. The winner was Tautvaišas. The American military zone DP chess union was established to promote future cooperation. Melņikov (Munich) was elected as a chairman of the board. Tautvaišas (Dilingen), Bolshakov (Munich), Dreibergs (Munich), Stabiņs (Augsburg), Lankav (Munich) and Selezņev (Aschaffenburg) were elected as a board members." http://periodika.lv/periodika2-view... |
