FIDE player card for Paulo Bersamina

PAULO BERSAMINA
(born Feb-01-1998, 27 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

FIDE Master (2010); International Master (2014).

Bersamina won his FIDE master title when he won the 11th ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championship for the U12 division in Olongapo City in June 2010. He gained his International Master title in 2014 when he won the ASEAN Junior Championship in June 2014.

In 2010, at the age of 12 years 3months 23 days, he became the youngest player ever to win the National Junior Championship. He went on to win the 2nd Singapore International Youth Championships 2011 - Open U14 with 8/9. The Philippines team came 2nd overall (behind hosts Vietnam) in the 13th ASEAN+ Age Group Championships held in June 2012 in Hue City in Vietnam, with Bersamina winning 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals and a bronze medal in the U14 Team and Individual events.

Bersamina started 2013 strongly: playing in the 1st Chairman's Cup International Chess Championship in Manila, he scored 5.5/9 and a few days later competed at the Zonal 3.3 Open where he scored 4/9. These two events netted him 60 ratings points. His strong 4.5/9 result at the Manny Pacquiao Cup Continental Championship earned him another 26 rating points. A substandard performance at the 14th ASEAN+ U16 Championship was made up by a strong showing at the Asian U16 Championship where he placed =1st.

After a quiet start in the first half of 2014, he won the ASEAN Junior Championship held in Macau in June, scoring 7/9, a full point ahead of the field, netting his IM title in so doing. Just as impressive was shared 3rd at the 2014 National Championship in the Philippines, with 6.5/11, a point behind co-leaders Eugenio Torre and John Paul Gomez, a result that added over 30 ratings points to his card. He played board 4 for the Philippines at the Tromso Olympiad (2014), scoring 5/9 and won the most rating points in the team. He competed in the World Junior Championship 2014, scoring 7.5/13.

In March 2015 he scored a strong 5.5/9 in the 5th HDBank International Open tournament that was staged in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, his result including an even score against his five GM opponents. The following month in April, he scored a reasonably strong result with 6/9 in the annual Bangkok Chess Club Open.

Bersamina's highest rating to date was 2462 in 2020/2021.

Penguincw: < "Paulo Bersamina closed out his final age group tournament by ruling the under-20 standard, rapid and tying for first in blitz chess. Bersamina could have won the blitz tournament outright had he not lost to John Marvin Miciano, who finally won against the National University bet after 4 games.

Bersamina ended up sharing first with Pham Minh Hien and Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano, who faltered in the last round against Sarri Subajani, the tournament sensation from Sulu. But Bersamina got his second grandmaster result with his Davao achievements and needs to get a 3rd result to become a grandmaster." >

Dec-11-18  ambongtumbong: another shocker from tourney as posted by GM Vidit on his FB re:I am at the Asian championship in Makati, Philippines. It's a part of the World Championship cycle by FIDE.

I had to pay 150 USD for a room which actually costs 35-50 dollars as per the hotel and other websites (photos attached). After paying 150 dollars, there is no internet in the room. Food provided is awful. There is even no drinking water in the room(!!) .

Me& my colleagues Abhijit Kunte and Lalith Babu went outside to buy water, but then the most unexpected incident happened. We were attacked by local goons who possesed weapons. We were cornered and then attacked. We tried to flee but we were chased and finally marginally escaped. We are still trying to recover from this horrible incident.

The saddest part is that upon informing this to organizers they remained aloof and ignored the seriousness of the issue.

What kind of an event is this? Players are charged 5 times more & forced to stay in this place, where basic necessities like cleanliness, proper food and water are not provided. This is sheer exploitation of players.

I am writing this post so that fide and the authorities will take the rightful action.

Dec-11-18  pinoymaster77: Na fake news na yung k Vidit, why post here. Andun sa Official NCFP FB page
Dec-11-18  pinoymaster77: "The 20-year-old Bersamina, a two-time Olympiad veteran whose FIDE rating of 2444 pales in comparison to his foe’s astronomical 2714, unleashed a brilliant queen sacrifice to force Le, a former world blitz champion who peaked as high as the top 20 in the world last year, into submission to avert a Philippine shutout.

“I just saw an opportunity and I took advantage of it. I feel good about this big win, I hope it’s a start of something big for me,” said Bersamina.

The win sent Bersamina in an early 28-chesser gridlock at the helm and will battle Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who turned back reigning ASEAN seniors champion IM Chito Garma, in the second round as of posting time."

Sana maisama sa 2019 SEAG team
