Oct-07-13  waustad: Here's the lineup for OSG Baden Baden in the German Frauengundesliga: http://www.schachbund.de/SchachBL/b...

I know that the top folks often don't show up, but they are loaded for bear. Both Muzychuk sisters and Viktorija Čmilytė plus Anna Zatonskih, Ketino Kachiani-Gersinska, and several more IM or GM level players. It is even stronger on paper than last year where EM wound up playing first board in the last rounds though officially 4th. Of course we know that many people who are listed don't play for their official team. There doesn't seem to be a way to search the database for players available on line. Lisa Schut is listed 12th. Bad Königshofen also looks strong on paper, but none of the other teams have as much listed depth.

Oct-07-13  waustad: In the first round in the FBL EM beat Fiona Sieber and in the second she drew with Veronica Schneider. Last year the games weren't available consistently through the season but were all published afterwards.
Oct-08-13  waustad: The FBL schedule: http://www.schachbund.de/SchachBL/f...
Oct-08-13  waustad: The final weekend of the season they play the other highest rated team and maybe the most photographed team (with Melanie Ohme and Ticia Gara among others).
Oct-08-13  waustad: While poking around looking for more info on the first week in the FBL I ran across an article on a simul in Bregenz, including lots of pictures. http://www.schachklubbregenz.at/?na... Included is a link to one game she lost along with some prep describing her opening tendencies and such by the winner of that game.
Oct-10-13  Lingfield Grove: Impressive research!! I notice Helene Mira was playing. How often has a six times national champion lost on the "wrong side" of a simul?
Oct-10-13  Lingfield Grove: oops!! She may have drawn.
Oct-10-13  waustad: Here is a picture and article from when EM came in second in the open class on tiebreaks and Mira won: http://schach.wienerzeitung.at/Oest...

and another from when EM won the open class: http://schach.wienerzeitung.at/Oest...

Oct-10-13  waustad: Here is also a picture of Eva Moser with Helene Mira and younger players from one of Mira's summer chess camps, which she is still doing. http://www.chessbase.de/newsroom/Ta...
Oct-11-13  waustad: In the FBL schedule I see:

05. Runde So, 26.01.2013
Of course I suspect they meant 2014, but there are many players from the league playing at Gibraltar starting the next day. I ran accross an article from last year where one weekend most of the top boards were all missing for that reason. I don't think I'd read that article earlier perhaps because EM was not mentioned by name, only as the Austrian #1 so different searches turned it up. I seem to recall that when I lived there the Austrians I knew who went on a Winter holliday mostly went to Greece not Spain. This may help explain why so few Austrians play at the Gibtel tournament. Then again, the Austria of today isn't the biggest country in Europe and Winter sports like skiing are extremely popular.

Oct-13-13  waustad: In Staatsmeisterschaft 2013 Blitzschach a loss to Robert Kreisl in the penultimate round took her out of contention for first place. She ended up with 9/13. The rapids start today, but no results have been posted yet. http://chess-results.com/tnr103227....
Oct-13-13  parisattack: Hi <waustad> Updates and links much appreciated!
Oct-13-13  waustad: She came in 1/2 point behind the leaders in the rapids. She lost to Khaled Mahdy in both rapids and blitz. I'll have to find out more about this guy. All 3 games at chess365 between them were drawn, but they were over 10 years ago.
Oct-14-13  Lingfield Grove: Yes thank you. Thought these were very respectable results for Eva.
Oct-14-13  Lingfield Grove: Re the recent simul how are the boards arranged? Not as simple as juniors have white and big men black. Why does Mira have white for instance?
Oct-14-13  Paint My Dragon: It is clear from the pre-session publicity shots that all the boards were initially set up with EM as White. Most organizers will do this as many simul-givers will insist on it being the case. But it is also common for some simul-givers to offer a switch of colours at the commencement.

At a recent simul with GM Keith Arkell, I took the offered switch, but noted many around me were already mentally prepared for Black and kept things as they were. However, I think you would expect a player of Mira's quality to prefer White, given the choice.

By the way, I must echo <Paris Attack>'s comment earlier. If every player page on cg.com gave such well researched and timely information as this one, it would be an unreserved pleasure to browse the site.

Oct-14-13  waustad: One tidbit from the rapids is that in the final round she beat Georg Danner. This is her first win over him that I know of (the published record is likely incomplete), after some short draws and some long endgame wins by Danner. Of course after 13 blitz and 8 rapid games in 2 days, he was probably rather tired by the time he got to the game. He'll be 67 in 2 weeks and his rating has been slipping for the last few years.
Oct-16-13  waustad: Chessbase gives a review of her new DVD: http://de.chessbase.com/Home/TabId/... The paragraph discussing the concept of the DVD also seems to describe her approach to play over the board. It makes for interesting chess but also sometimes leads to serious time scrambles.

My problem with chessbase is that they require one to run Windows to use their products and I don't have a machine using that OS. Now that I'm retired I could get a laptop that runs it, but working in a UNIX shop, I was always going back and forth between Solaris, Linux and OsX, which is built on BSD. I'm one of the few Mac users who uses the terminal window every day. When I had to work on Windows PCs I always found them to be annoying (we always seem to prefer what we're used to.)

Oct-16-13  parisattack: <When I had to work on Windows PCs I always found them to be annoying (we always seem to prefer what we're used to.)>

I would love to go Mac but alas I am too deep in Windows for now. If I ever retire I will go Mac but keep a small all-in-one Windows PC.

Have you considered a Windows Emulator for OsX? There are a couple of them quite reliable and reasonable fast now. They are definitely not the nightmare they were just a few years ago.

Oct-17-13  waustad: While looking around at games with early c6 in King's Indians I discovered that an early and frequent adherent to these lines is Maia Chiburdanidze I wonder if EM took some inspiration from her games.
Oct-19-13  waustad: ASVOE Pamhagen gets a bye in the first round. Also, in the latest listing EM is just listed as the captain, not as a player.
Oct-20-13  Lingfield Grove: Yes,looks like she is saving herself for Poland next month. However there some big scalps to be had if she does play this week.
Oct-20-13  waustad: Yes. This is a lot more like what an Austrian team should look like: http://chess-results.com/tnr113757....
Oct-20-13  waustad: Obviously the lists for the European Team Shampionships are not final, since I doubt that Stefanova is playing a simul against entire teams. The lists will probably be set for sure like was the case at the Club Cup, at the time of the organizational meeting, the day before play begins.

Looking at Olimpbase I noted that EM has never played in the Club Cup, either on the men's or women's side. Here is more information on international team play: http://www.olimpbase.org/playersu/e...

Oct-21-13  waustad: I've noticed that the Austrians often seem to have some sort of mascot that they bring to tournaments. Here is a picture of one from the Istanbul Olympiad: http://www.chess.at/gallery/index.p... Perhaps a missing player was there in spirit.
