May-22-07 | | Karpova: The Klitschko brothers are missing (good friends of Kramnik by the way) on the list. |

 | | BishopBerkeley: <Karpova> Yes, I think they should be included. I believe Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer is also missing (he has written about his enthusiasm for the Royal Game), as well as his sometime opponent Natan Sharansky ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natan_... , who is said to be quite a strong Chessplayer). I wonder at the inclusion of William Shakespeare: I doubt that we have any direct evidence that William Shakespeare was a Chessplayer (we know so little about him). He does mention Chess in the play "The Tempest," but that's the only connection I'm aware of. I admire Bill Wall's Chess pages. His work reminds me of Wikipedia: errors may creep in now and then, but the accuracy is generally quite high. If Mr. Wall were to insist on 99.9% accuracy, I think much valuable and intriguing material would be unavailable. So long as one is aware of the nature of his pages, they can be a valuable resource. One thinks of the rhyming Russian phrase that U.S. President Ronald Reagan so often invoked, "doveryay, no proveryay": "trust, but verify"! Having said that, I take my mitre off to Mr. Wall who has created a very rich Cornucopia of Caissa for many to enjoy.... (: ♗ Bishop Berkeley ♗ :)

 | | LIFE Master AJ: I am a big fan of Bill's works. (I have bunches of his books.) 500 French Miniatures, 500 King's Gambit Miniatures, 500 Sicilian Miniatures, etc. Hi Bill, this is A.J. Goldsby, from Pensacola, FL. How are you? |
|
Jun-20-07 | | Marmot PFL: One of my games from a junior tournament made it into "500 Sicilian Miniatures". I was only about 1500-1600 at the time and my opponent even lower but it was a nice trap, and it was good to see you didn't have to be a master to get a game published. |

 | | wwall: My miniatures were selected because I liked the game. You didn't have to be a master to get a game published. I used a variety of sources to show play from grandmasters to lower rated players. Glad to see one of your games made it in the collection Marmot. The games were not as annotated as I would have liked, but I tried to briefly comment on most of the games. For good annotations, wee A.J. Goldsby's page at http://www.geocities.com/lifemaster... |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: Bill - glad to see you are alive and kicking. Can I expect to see you at a tournament anytime soon? (Or are you too busy with work now?) Wasn't looking for a plug for my site, but thanks. BTW, yours is really great, I am constantly surprised by how much info there is on yours! Would you care to estimate the number of hours your site took to create? How many hours do you put in in say ... a week? ... a month? ... a year? Or have you ever bothered to keep track? (Just curious.) |
|
Jun-30-07
 | | wwall: Not much tournament play except on the Internet. Too busy with work and teaching tennis 6 days a week. Haven't kept track, but it may be an hour a day on chess articles, games, trivia, research, etc on chess. |
|
Jun-30-07 | | centercounter: Bill, I actually found a predecessor for a "homecooked" line I had prepared in one of your books. A little disappointing, as I thought I came up with the line as an original, but I did get some ideas from the game. PS: I didn't get to use that line till over 15 years after I prepared it. :P By the way, great work on your books (and I really have to check out your website!) Bill! |

|
Nov-22-07 | | guy0307: Is William R Wall your father? |
|
Dec-06-07
 | | wwall: Yes, William Raymond Wall (1920-1980) was my father who taught me how to play chess. He was just an average player, but got me interested in the game and joining a chess club. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: Hello Bill:
Bought your "500 English Miniatures" from a book vendor (Sig Smith) in Mobile last weekend. I have gone over a few of the games. (Pretty interesting stuff.) Do you have a favorite miniature from that book?
