Joshka - In 1991, when I lived in Palo Alto, John Donaldson gave me all the back issues of Seirawan's "Inside Chess magazines to deliver to Bobby Fischer. I knew Joan Targ, sister of Bobby Fischer (my uncle was a school teacher in Palo Alto that taught both Targ kids and knew the family). I gave the magazines to my wife to deliver to the Targs in Portola Valley. I would have gone, but I was playing at a LERA tournament in Sunnyvale at the time. My wife delivered the chess magazines to Joan, but did not stay (it was raining). But she did notice a red-headed older man reading a newspaper in the living room. It wasn't Rusell, Joan's husband. Turns out it was Bobby Fischer, but my wife did not recognize him until later, when his picture was all over the place during the Fischer-Spassky 1992 match. I tried to call Fischer for an interview, but got his lawyer instead (Fischer didn't do interviews). The lawyer did acknowledge he got the chess magazines my wife delivered. Also, I was a coach and tutor of Jordy Mont-Reynaud in Palo Alto. It turns out that the house he lived in used to belong to the Targs where Fischer would sometimes visit. |

Anyway, I trust this missed opportunity taught you a valuable lesson: never send a woman to do a delivery man's job. |

Mar-07-08 | | MichAdams: Russell Targ was into parapsychology, wasn't he? Which brings us nicely onto the subject of Uri Geller and his meeting with Fischer. I emailed Geller about it once, but, unhappily, I can't remember anything of detail about his reply, only that it was the usual hokum. |

 | | wwall: Dr. Russell Targ was a laser physicist at Lockheed Martin. Earlier, while at Stanford, he investigated Uri Geller and believed he had psychic abilities. I think he is now trying to claim all of Fischer's money in Fischer's will for his (Targ's) two sons as the beneficiaries. |

 | | wwall: Thanks. I've now lived longer than Capablanca, Alekhine, Tal, and Petrosian (maybe world champions die younger and patzers live longer) |
|
May-14-08 | | brankat: Yes, it is only fair that way :-) |
|
Oct-24-08 | | dwavechess: Hi WWal!I would like to know what do you think of the different methods to guess who was greatest ever, like Elo, Sonas chessmetrics, Edo historical ratings, Bratko & Guid, Truechess.com , members.aon.at/sfischl/stat.html, and other computational approachs like nimh, and others you can find on the net |
|
Dec-24-08 | | WhiteRook48: NN was a super-patzer (ok, maybe not that unskilled) and he's the oldest guy in the database. So maybe patzers do live longer than champions. |
|
Dec-27-08 | | WhiteRook48: This guy seems like Morphy. |

Jan-02-09 | | WhiteRook48: happy new year Bill! |

 | | BishopBerkeley: I saw a NASA T-shirt once that said, "As a matter of fact, I AM a rocket scientist!" I thought that was rather clever....
(: ♗ Bishop Berkeley ♗ :)
P.S. Chess is not rocket science! (Then again, rocket science is not Chess!) |
|
Apr-23-09 | | WhiteRook48: Unless you name your rocket the <Bishop> |

May-11-09 | | laskereshevsky: Happy Birthday Mr. Wall...
We dont know each other, but please allow me to ask if U ever Worked in Palo Alto's Lockheed with an (now past away) engineer Named Laszlo Szabo original from Hungary... (the friends and colleagues nick-name's was JIMBO)... |
|
May-11-09
 | | wwall: I did not work in Palo Alto's Lockheed, but played in LERA events and worked at NASA Ames in Mountain View and Onizuka AFS from 1985 to 1991. I organized and played in almost all the Palo Alto chess events. I don't recall that name, but it would be a famous chess name for Szabo. I lived in Palo Alto for several years and had relatives there. |

Happy Birthday!
Mr. Wall, Yahoo pulls the plug on <geocities> this year. How will this affect your chess content hosted by them? |

 | | chessgames.com: Before the days of computer databases, Bill Wall's famous manuals of opening traps were as much staples to a chess player's diet as bread and butter. Happy birthday, Mr. Wall, and may you have many more! — Chessgames.com Staff |

May-11-09 | | laskereshevsky: <wwall> Thanks for your answer... Now I realize my mistake, his name was IMRE SZABO, and not Laszlo....When writting i was distractly thinking about the chess master... He wasnt a chess player, and wasnt related to the famous Hungarian GrandMaster Laszlo Szabo. ... An Atherton's resident, Even with the big difference of age between us, I was very friendly guested several times in his Villa... He worked succesfully for the lochkeed for about 25 years, Involved in several NASA's projects like the Shuttle, Hubble Telescope etc.... thats because after reading your Bio, i asked it... |
|
May-11-09 | | karnak64: Well, Happy Birthday Mr. Wall. As a young player, I snatched up a few of your pamphlets (paid for 'em, too) at tournaments. If I'm better as an older player now, you had a piece in it. Many happy returns! |
|
May-11-09 | | WhiteRook48: Happy Birthday! |
|
May-11-09 | | carpetshark: Szabo is a common surname in Hungary so it wouldn't be surprising if you met anyone from that country by that name. Happy Birthday Mr Wall! |
