SEBASTIEN FELLER
(born Mar-11-1991, 34 years old) France

[what is this?]

IM in 2007, GM in 2007. ICC: GodSebFeller. French Junior champion 2007. European U16 vice champion 2007. Played as 1st reserve in the European Team Ch 2009 (Novi Sad, +4 =4 -1). French Blitz champion 2010. Winner of the Paris championship July 2010*. In July 2011 he was ranked as the fifth best junior in the world.

In October 2010, Sébastien Feller won the gold medal for best individual performance on board 5 at the Khanty-Mansiysk Olympiad. However, a disciplinary committee of the French chess federation determined that Feller had cheated during the Olympiad using cell phone text messages relayed to him by team captain Arnaud Hauchard. Feller received a 3-year ban followed by 2 years of community service with the federation or another association. The decision was appealed and pending the appeal, Feller participated in the 12th European Individual Championship (2011) and placed =5th (7th on tiebreak), qualifying him for the World Cup (2011). The continuing appeal process enabled Feller to maintain his participation in this event, where he defeated Moldavian GM Viorel Iordachescu in the first round, but lost to Russian GM Alexander Grischuk in the 25 minutes rapid game tiebreaker of round 2, thereby exiting the event. Finally in July 2012, the FIDE Ethics Commission rejected Feller's objections and found him guilty of breaches of the code of ethics, banning him from playing in FIDE-rated events for 2 years and 9 months from 1 August 2012.** Feller also had to return his gold medal and prize money. His opponents could request to get back their lost Elo points. The results of the French team were not affected, though. FIDE notified him on April 27, 2015 of prolonging the ban, in case he didn't return the gold medal and prize money. On May 6, 2015 FIDE declared that Feller was from now on allowed to participate in FIDE-rated events, since he had returned the gold medal and prize money.***

Apr-08-11  SugarDom: A lot of people here in this forum is kinda like the suspicious husband.

He hires a detective agency to follow his wife.

The wife meets with a handsome young lad and goes to dinner with him. After wards after sipping some wine they proceed to the hotel room where the detective see them kissing from the window. Then they switched off the lights.

These events were all reported by the detective to the husband, who replied:

"They turned off the lights? Drats! Now we'll never know for sure if my wife is cheating on me!".

  offramp: Feller is paying some detectives to find "the REAL cheaters."

  Peligroso Patzer: <SugarDom> LOL. When the allegations first emerged, I was inclined to withhold judgment, but the case against Feller et al. has become convincing. It is a great shame. Chess needs a zero tolerance policy, i.e., a lifetime ban for the first instance of cheating.
Aug-14-11  Prugno: Today Feller lost his first round game in the 2011 French Championship against Fressinet.

It will be interesting to see how he will score in this very tough event, featuring top players such as Vachier-Lagrave and Bacrot as well as several "naturalized" Frenchmen like Istratescu and Hamdouchi (a 30' delay in Internet retransmission is also enforced).

Aug-19-11  polarmis: Feller responds to the cheating allegations (though it's clear he's decided not to discuss the details while things are still being handled by the courts...):

  Domdaniel: So ('this') Feller gets to play in the French championships because he's appealing? Right.
Aug-19-11  Gregor Samsa Mendel: <Dom>--

http://www.chessbase.com/news/2010/...

Some might say that this Feller is rather appealing.

Aug-19-11  polarmis: <Domdaniel: So ('this') Feller gets to play in the French championships because he's appealing? Right.>

Something like that - it seems he won an appeal, or at least the court suspended the sentence pending another hearing: http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/f... It's hard to follow French jurisprudence, especially when translated by Google :)

He's supposed to be playing in the World Cup as well.

Aug-20-11  JoergWalter: Don't hire Charlie Chan's grandson:

<THE DETECTIVE A chinese detective was hired by a husband to watch his wife, suspected of seeing another man. After a few days he sent this report: Most honorable sir: You leave house. He come house. I watch. He and she leave house. I follow. He and she go in hotel. I climb tree, look in window. He kiss she She kiss he. He strip he. She strip he He play with she. She play with he. I play with me. I fall out of tree. I do not see. . . NO FEE!>

Jul-30-12  tahdah: Suspensions to start Aug 01, 2012 for Mr. Sébastien FELLER, Mr. Arnaud HAUCHARD.

http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/201... FIDE Ethics Commission suspends Hauchard, Feller and Marzolo

Judgement rendered by the FIDE Ethics Commission in the case “French Team”, concerning a complaint submitted by the French Chess Federation against Mr. Sébastien FELLER, Mr. Arnaud HAUCHARD and Mr. Cyril MARZOLO, and a report submitted by the FIDE Executive Director, in reference to facts allegedly committed during the 2010 Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk (Russia), for an alleged violation of par. 2.2.5 of the FIDE Code of Ethics.

The Ethics Commission rules that:

- Mr. Arnaud HAUCHARD has to be sanctioned with the exclusion from the participation in all FIDE tournaments, as a player or as a member of a national delegation, for a period of 3 (three) years, starting from the 1st of August 2012;

- Mr. Sébastien FELLER has to be sanctioned with the exclusion from the participation in all FIDE tournaments, as a player or as a member of a national delegation, for a period of 2 (two) years and 9 (nine) months, starting from the 1st of August 2012;

- Mr. Cyril MARZOLO has to be sanctioned with the exclusion from the participation in all FIDE tournaments, as a player or as a member of a national delegation, for a period of 1 (one) year and 6 (six) months, with a suspension of the sanction for the last nine months, under probation, in accordance with the decision of the CNOS (Comité National Olympique et Sportif Français); for what concerns the effects of the present decision, the validity of the already executed suspension since 27 May 2011 can be confirmed, but it has to be affirmed the competence of the FIDE EC regarding the evaluation of the period of probation, starting from 27 February 2012 till 27 November 2012, and the French Chess Federation has to be requested to send the FIDE Secretariat a report on the behavior of Mr. Cyril MARZOLO during the above mentioned period of nine months;

- FIDE Secretariat and FIDE Presidential Board have to be informed of the present decision for all possible consequences related to the results of the games played by Mr Sébastien FELLER during the 2010 Chess Olympiad, concerning ratings, rankings and prizes;

- a written motivation will follow and will be communicated to the parties by the FIDE Secretariat.

Jul-31-12  TheFocus: His nickname is Jolly Good.
Aug-20-12  brankat: S.Feller got caught cheating in October of 2010. Full 3 years after he had won a GM title, and had had his most successful season, so far. One has to wonder whether there had been any cheating then, too.

  LIFE Master AJ: I wonder also ... when did he start cheating ... someone (not me) who has the time and energy should research a few of his games to determine when he started cheating and how many of his games match chess engines ...

  LIFE Master AJ: Also - one (former) mayor in Italy was banned (for life?) for cheating and using a chess engine ... seems to be a lot of this going around nowadays.

  LIFE Master AJ: He became an IM AND a GM in the same year (2007) ... also French Junior Champion the same year. (One wonders if he was already cheating back then.)

Bloody shame, too. He might be a good player, but now he has forever tarnished his name with this stupidity ...

May-21-14  zanzibar: Well, he was qualified to play in FIDE events in the past, and presumably after serving his disciplinary period will be eligible to play again in the future...

So shouldn't FIDE keep his card active?

He card has disappeared, which can be confusing. Presumably the FIDE Flags were invented for these sort of purposes (and not just to record redundantly record "w" for "F" players).

  LIFE Master AJ: Yes, it appears S. Feller has been deleted from the FIDE database.

I guess he will be returned when his time (on suspension) is up.

OR ... one wonders if this is permanent???

Jun-01-14  Jim Bartle: Or perhaps he doesn't want to come back. He'll probably be shunned by other players.

  LIFE Master AJ: Possibly ... I am sure that, if he came back, that he would be dogged by this for the rest of his career.

I wonder what he is doing right now?

  MissScarlett: <Dear Mr. Feller

We refer to the decision made that you should hand back the prize money and the medal you received from the 2010 Chess Olympiad. This you have not done and at the Presidential Board held in Chengdu April 27th 2015, it was decided that should you not send the money and the medal back by the 7th of May 2015, that proceedings will be taken against you.

Meanwhile, your suspension will remain in place until a final decision has been made.

Best regards
