  Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> Very interesting! Her paternal grandfather, George Sturgis, was the first president of the United States Chess Federation, from 1939-1942.

As for Robert Welch of the John Birch Society, I notice that Mitchell and Sturgis both played in the Championship section of the 1943 US Open with "Robert H W Welch".

Wikipedia gives Welch's full name as "Robert Henry Winborne Welch", so that could well be the same person.
