ILIA ILJIUSHENOK
(born Aug-16-1993, 31 years old) Russia

[what is this?]

International Master (2013); Grandmaster (2018).

Shot to prominence in March 2015 when the untitled player finished =5th (14th on tiebreak) in the European Individual Championship (2015). This result not only earned him a double GM norm, but by reason of qualifying for the World Cup (2015), he would have received a direct award of the International Master title had he not already won 3 IM norms prior to this result. As he had previously achieved a rating of 2400 without an application for the title having been lodged with FIDE prior to his EICC result, his IM title comes into effect retrospectively from 13 October 2013. (1) He met Dmitry Jakovenko in the first round of the World Cup and lost in the blitz tiebreaker after drawing the standard games and two sets of rapid game tiebreakers.

This guy is just **killing** at the 16th EICC in Jerusalem right now.

European Individual Championship (2015)/Ilia Iljiushenok

Mar-04-15  twinlark:

Iljiushenok is, as of round 8, within the qualifying group of 23. It's interesting to note his playing history.

He went from 2112-2426 in a couple of years ending 2009 without gaining an IM (or any other) title, and has basically remained in the low 2400s ever since.

http://ratings.fide.com/id.phtml?ev...

If he makes the cut to the World Cup, he automatically gains an IM title, and would pick up a double GM norm in the process.

He picked the best possible time to have the tournament of his life.

He missed a win against Eljanov in the first round and lost, but it was a **fantastic** game.

Penguincw: Congrats to Iljiushenok for his performance at the European Individual Championship (2015). He entered as the 128th seed (!), and finished tied for 5th (14th on tiebreaks). He scored 7.5/9 (+5,-1,=5).

He also gained 35.6 rating points and was the only non-GM in the top 42. That means he gets to qualify for the World Cup later this year!

One last note, with black, he was a solid 4.5/5.

Mar-08-15  sonia91: He also scored a double GM norm and gained the title of IM through qualification to the World Cup.

<Penguincw: with black, he was a solid 4.5/5, including a win over Vladimir Potkin.>

Ohad Kraus won against Potkin, not Iljiushenok.

Mar-09-15  asianwarrior: This must be his lucky year!
