SEAN READER
(born Sep-18-1993, died Aug-14-2006, 12 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]
Sean Christian Reader was born September 18, 1993 in Santa Monica, California. He joined the chess team at Meadows Elementary in Valencia, CA when he was in 1st grade. Won the title of Southern California State 3rd Grade Champion in 2002. He became the Western States 6th Grade Champion in 2005. Perennially ranked in the national Top 100, Sean was consistently among the Top 3 Southern Californian chess players for his age.

Just days after being diagnosed with leukemia, Sean boarded a plane with his team to head for the 2005 SuperNationals in Nashville, Tennessee. Despite his final round loss to top-ranked Marc Tyler Arnold, his score of 5-2 led Meadows Elementary to a tie for 2nd Place Team in the K-6 Open Division.

Sean passed away after an 18 month battle with leukemia, but his legacy lives on through the Sean Reader Memorial Chess Fund (a.k.a. Sean's Fund) which, among other things, provides young patients at Children's Hospital Los Angeles with a special chess kit containing a lesson book, software, a strong magnetic set, and various chess trinkets.

alexmagnus: Wait, if he died in 2006 then who played the 2007 games? This also brings questions whether all other games are categorized correctly.

alexmagnus: Ah, now I notice that the 2007 games are duplicates of the 2004 games...

coachjay: Sean was not just a talented chess player, he was an amazing young man. After his passing, his parents set up Sean's Fund (www.seansfund.org) which now brings chess into the lives of underprivileged youths and young patients at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Sean taught us to always battle hard and to not whine about the little things. We miss him more than words can describe.
