May-15-21 | | Granny O Doul: She's sung the national anthem at the NY State high school chess championships. As far as I know, no one else has ever even been asked to. I'm sure at least that it's not been a feature of most runnings. She "strives to play deeply nuanced moves and ideas in her games", her coach says. Of course, Coach is going to be reticent about his ways of breaking such bad habits. |

Besides, these days I'm really not a patriotic person so I disavow any national anthem singing at almost all events. sincerely, sophie |

What do you think about Justin? |

 | | perfidious: Standing at attention for La Marseillaise being played without the opening verse sung, in homage to a bracelet winner at the WSOP, is what one might call unusual. |

The situation that struck me as odd would be where a singer was engaged to perform an anthem that had no words. |

 | | perfidious: <FM DHL....The situation that struck me as odd would be where a singer was engaged to perform an anthem that had no words.> That is indeed peculiar; maybe the singer was getting some baksheesh. A curiosity at the World Series is how the music is played for all the anthems, but lyrics are never sung, even for <Star Spangled Banner> or <Rule, Britannia!> both of whose countries made the podium this year while I was about. |
