MACON SHIBUT
(born Oct-11-1957, 67 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

FIDE Master Macon A Shibut is a three-time winner of the Virginia state championship (1993, 1999, and 2002) and the author of Paul Morphy and the Evolution of Chess Theory. In addition to his three state titles, Shibut has won numerous open tournaments in the mid-Atlantic region, including the Atlantic Open, Maryland Open, D.C. Open, and Virginia Open.

Since 1991 Macon Shibut has been the Editor of Virginia Chess, the official newsletter of the Virginia Chess Federation (VCF). Shibut contributed articles and analysis to VCF newsletters for years before his editorship began.

His book Paul Morphy and the Evolution of Chess Theory is the most complete single volume collection of the games of Paul Morphy. It includes analysis of selected games, Morphy's openings, Morphy's endgames, and the chess of Morphy's time. The book reprints a famous article by Wilhelm Steinitz analyzing Morphy's chess as well as an essay on Morphy by Alexander Alekhine. The games section includes all known Morphy games (over 400): tournament chess, match, blitz, blindfold and games at odds. Originally published in hardcopy by Caissa Editions (1993), Paul Morphy and the Evolution of Chess Theory is now available in paperback as a Dover reprint.

offramp: I was in a French restaurant and ordered oysters.

The waiter said, "Would sir like a Macon with that?"

I said, "Why? Are they still full of water?"

MissScarlett: Does the guideline, <No spamming, advertising, or duplicating posts.>, also refer to player biographies?

keypusher: <MissScarlett> I couldn't say, Mr. Volunteer Auxiliary Policeman. But since neither the author of the biography nor cg.com is getting paid on sales of Shibut's book, I fail to see how anything in the bio is advertising.
Nov-05-17  ughaibu: Being unable to get the joke of either Offramp or Tomlinsky, I was just happy to be able to assume that "a fine book" would be, by association with Fine, a crap book.

keypusher: <ughaibu> I've never read Beim's book on Morphy, which I understand is very good. But I genuinely enjoyed Shibut's book. It's kind of a grab bag (chapter titles include "Thomas Barnes" "Odds" "Blunders and Omissions" "Selected Morphy Endgames") but any modern master who really digs in to Morphy and his contemporaries is going to find interesting things.

Macon is famous as a source of very good wine. I have been there and drunk it at its source. I remember also that there is a huge bridge there.

Some Macon wine does indeed go very well with oysters.

However, when you say the name Macon it can sound a bit like "mac on", where mac is an abbreviation for mackintosh, which in the UK is a waterproof outer garment (sometimes incorporating a scapular).

Therefore the waiter <may> have been asking:
"Sir, with your oysters would you like to wear an impermeable raincoat?"

To which I, in jest, said,
""Why? Are they still full of water," as if I expected a deluge of brine to spout from each oyster.
