Niedersächsische Landeseinzelmeisterschaften 1947-1964

91 Schachspieler [almost entirely given with full name and DOBs] haben in den 18 Jahren an den Meisterturnieren teilgenommen. Die meisten sind längst verstorben, so auch Kurt Pfaff [author of the present bulletin]. ..'

Mar-23-25  Alan McGowan: In a brief bio prepared for the 1955 Canadian championship, it is stated that Heinz Matthai - not Hans - was born 1908 in Hannover (thanks to Stephen Wright).

It also mentions that he was champion of Lower Saxony three times, and this is confirmed at https://nsv-online.de/ruhmeshalle/?...

<login> suggested 27 April 1908 as the dob, and this is confirmed by a Hannover birth record in Ancestry for Heinz Ferdinand Friedrich Max Matthai.

Matthai arrived in Canada in 1953 and immediately made his presence felt by winning the 1954 Montreal City Ch and the 1954 Quebec Open Ch, as pointed out by <GrahamClayton>.

All references to Matthai in Montreal newspapers show his name as Heinz. The last mention of him is 1963.

CG has one game from a 1965 German Ch Candidates event at Kiel, Germany (ChessBase has many more). The July 1965 Deutsche Schachzeitung, p225, shows a list of participants, including Matthai. The report mentions that there was a mix of old and young players.

There is a memorial stone in a cemetery in Verden, Lower Saxony, for Heinz Matthai 1908-1970. https://verdener-familienforscher.d...

Apr-22-25  Chessist: A Mr. Matthäi is buried in the Verden cemetery, not a Mr. Matthai. The chess player's date of death is different.

perfidious: The scroll of players who sat across the board from Tarrasch and Fischer must be short indeed; Euwe is the only other who comes to mind in the moment.
Apr-23-25  Chessist: The year of death (1970) should be deleted from the biography, as there is no evidence that the person named on the gravestone ("Matthäi") is identical with the chess player (who bore the different name "Matthai").
