  John Saunders: I was a close friend of Gavin's for 30+ years. I admit it does look quite a lot like him, but at the same time - it's just not him! In the unlikely event that I'm wrong and someone manages to prove it really is him, then I shall retreat to the second line of trenches and say that he looks distinctly un-Gavin-like, it's not how his friends would want to remember him and that many better photos of him could be found.

After a bit of digging, and with help from fellow members of the English Chess Forum, I would suggest the face shown previously here was a Czech player called Stanislav Gschwendtner, who was playing in the same competition. His photo appears on this page - https://players.chessbase.com/en/pl...
